Five Local Men Enlist in U S Army and Air Force

Five men from the Bluefield area were enlisted in the U S Army or Air Force and assigned to bases of their choice per a local recruiting station. Lea S White of Pembroke Virginia joined the 2nd Airborne at Ft Jackson DC. Ulysses R Higginbotham of Bluefield entered the 9th Infantry at Ft Dix NJ. James B Bowles of Mayberry Texas joined the U S Air Force in San Antonio. Arthur V Gordon of Bluefield joined the 9th Infantry at Ft Dix NJ. Donald B Kelley of Pipestone South Carolina enlisted at Ft Jackson.

Congress May Seek Volunteer Army

Congress may vote new recruiting incentives to build a volunteer army. Senator Wherry told the United States chamber of commerce that a limited presidential draft authority could be used if volunteer forces fail to meet military strength. He urged meeting multi million dollar national preparedness and foreign aid demands without turning the economy into a police state.

Virginia Phone Rate Hearing Set in Richmond

A hearing on Virginia Telephone Co. proposed big monthly rate increases for about 21 000 subscribers in western Virginia will start tomorrow before the state corporation commission. No formal protests have been filed yet though opposition may appear. Actuaries estimate the hike at about 135 000 dollars annually roughly 50 cents per subscriber monthly. Election Row Decision Upheld

The West Virginia Supreme Court upheld the Kanawha County court’s refusal to appoint election officials from the Democratic chairman’s list. The court denied the committee’s bid to force acceptance, noting the committee had not formally approved the list before submission and that the chairman could not unilaterally alter it. The case hinges on authority over appointment and whether the committee’s later vote to endorse the list was binding.

Almond Admitted To Supreme Court Visit Highlights First Return

Attorney General J Lindsay Almond Jr of Virginia was admitted to practice before the U S Supreme Court. He was accompanied by Rep Hobbs of Alabama on his first visit since resigning as sixth district representative. He planned to return to Richmond tomorrow morning.

Biblical Manuscripts Found in Holy Land

Dr. Elieser Sukenik announced the discovery of hundreds of Hebrew biblical and Apocryphal manuscripts in a Dead Sea cave near the Judean desert. He said some pages may be over 2,000 years old, dating to before the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. The leather scrolls, partly deciphered, were found by Bedouins in encoated jars wrapped in linen and sealed with wax.

Havaco Miner Fined On Assault Charge

Havaco coal miner Lewis Daugherty was fined $10 and costs in criminal court for assault and battery on his brother in law Otto Stroupe of Elkins. In a separate incident William D Hill of Belington and Joseph G Gower of Philippi were treated in an Elkins hospital after an airplane crash in Red House Maryland. Gower suffered a shattered leg and Hill multiple fractures and head injuries. A power company employee said the plane struck a high tension wire.
