Columbus April 26. Warden Preston E. Thomas of the Ohio Penitentiary testifies before the governor's committee denying brutality charges from inmates. He blames overcrowding, fire traps, and 1921 minimum sentence laws for prison strain. Survivors accuse him of harsh treatment amid a revolt. He calls the fire a double tragedy and says he did all to prevent catastrophe.
Washington reports that two of the three major investigations ordered by the senate will begin with Monday meetings of the senatorial campaign funds committee and the post office lease inquiry group. A senate judiciary subcommittee approved the Shipstead two year old bill to limit court injunctions in labor disputes and backed Vandenberg provisions to allow changes of judges on contempt complaints from outside attacks on judges. Norris said the measure would outlaw yellow dog contracts and require a showing of greater harm to grant relief.
On the S S Leviathan April 26 most Amer ican naval conference delegates bound for New York stayed indoors due to rough seas and squalls. Secretary of State Henry L. Stimson, confined by weather, worked in his suite while Captain Randall of the George Washington sent good wishes for the voyage back to London.
George Saunders, condemned Logan county Negro, was placed in the death house at the state prison in Moundville West Virginia today an hour and a half before word arrived that he had been reprieved by Governor Conney. Saunders said he was glad he did not have to stay in the death house. He maintains his innocence and believes a pardon may come. Saunders was convicted of a shooting two years ago. This marked his second trip to the death house. The reprieve is valid until July 11, following an earlier order from March 19 expiring May 2.
Washington reports General Ho Ying-Ching pledges to remove Communist brigands threatening American and other foreign missionaries in Hankow area. King-Han-Ting ordered to protect American life and property as officials urge action for the 25 foreigners including Bishop O'Shea and 18 Americans beleaguered in Kanchow.
In Muskogee Oklahoma David S Smith and his brother George Smith both of Connecticut were killed in a hotel room by two robbers. John L Wike and W H Seeley were bound and gagged. Seeley said two men in brown suits forced entry and shot the brothers as they resisted. The robbers fled. Seeley and Wike were unmolested and no shots were heard by other guests. Police investigated whether substantial cash was taken.
Joe Angel, visiting the grave of his wife who died in a January fire, returned to find his home destroyed by fire during his absence in Quaker Valley Kansas on April 26.
Wabash railway agrees to ICC consolidation terms and will acquire properties within the Wabash Seaboard system. Board chairman William H. Williams says authorized to pursue ownership of lines including Chesapeake and Ohio of Indiana, Norfolk and Western, Western Maryland, and other roads in the proposed system. The plan also involves Lehigh Valley, Wheeling and Lake Erie, Pittsburgh and West Virginia, and several others. Baltimore and Ohio and Chesapeake and Ohio of Indiana previously withdrew proposals at ICC request.
Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh lands at Pan-American field after a two hour three minute flight from Miami to Havana. Co pilots Basil Roe and Bert Benickey accompany him as 41 pounds of mail go to Havana and 211 pounds to Cristobal Canal Zone.
Three lawyers convicted in the Utah lead mail fraud hung jury probe were sentenced by Judge John C. Knox in Atlanta. Arthur N. Sager received a two year term on each of three counts with two concurrent and one suspended in good behavior, and banned from US government service. Joseph Shalleck and Edward H. Reynolds drew two years and eighteen months respectively for conspiracy, with sentences stayed pending appeals.
Laguna Beach California April 26 Moresby White attorney for Mrs Guy Bates Post said he found a letter in Mrs Post private desk indicating she and Mrs Doris May Palmer planned a death by own action pact. He noted the letter dated last Wednesday sealed with a silver seal and addressed to be opened by him in case of an accident. The two women were the subject of last rites after a coroner jury linked friendship to the deaths in a murder and death by own action verdict. Mrs Post daughter of actor and Adele Ritchie muse, left property to Mrs Palmer if she outlived her. Page Four.
In Detroit on April 26 a brass band led by Dr. G P D Peters surprised Mrs Arsenath Lee at her ninety third birthday with Alexander's Rag Time Band, delivering on a promise made years earlier.
Washington reports that President Hoover is expected to approve the $111 million omnibus rivers and harbors bill after the House passed it. Chairman Dempsey of the rivers and harbors committee said the measure aligns with the administration’s river works program and shares funding with existing projects.
The American liner President Harding collided with the British collier Kirkwood off Heligoland in thick fog. Kirkwood of 1,674 gross tons sank but all crew except one fireman were rescued. Harding was only slightly damaged and continued to Hamburg under its own power amid dense fog.
Mahatma Gandhi announced a planned direct action to seize the government salt depot at Dhareana as part of a broader civil disobedience campaign. He said he would lead men and women wearing homespun and sober of liquor, and warned that breaking the salt act alone would not gain independence. News from across India reported a relative lull in activity.
New York reports daylight saving time starts at 2 am tomorrow in 16 states and 17 Canadian cities. Clocks move forward an hour in Massachusetts Rhode Island New York New Jersey Connecticut and larger Pennsylvania cities with Ohio following in part. Sleep loss ends September 28 when clocks return.
At a Gridiron club dinner in Washington in 1930 President Hoover and the British ambassador revisited the Tientsin relief of foreigners by American Marines and Welsh Fusileers. A Sousa march named The Royal Welsh Fusileers debuted as Marines colors and a British flag were displayed.

Miss Bonnie Brown a 25 year old licensed air pilot died from injuries after a glider she piloted crashed from twenty feet altitude. The accident occurred near Los Angeles with authorities reporting the fatal incident tonight.

Representative Rankin voicing on NBC radio said President Hoover would not veto the veterans relief bill passed by the House last Thursday. He pledged to carry the fight to secure relief for World War I veterans, citing thousands with tuberculosis and neuro psychiatric troubles among uncompensated cases and other chronic diseases.
