The senate panel will recommend a federal inquiry into conditions at the Paint Creek coal field. The education and labor committee will conduct the investigation, with members from both parties guiding the process. Senator Kern had urged the probe via a special committee, now redirected to the standing committee.

Memorial day was observed today in Florida Mississippi Alabama and Georgia with flower laying on Confederate graves and singing of battle hymns of the south marking the main feature of observances in cities and towns.

Dallas April 26 The Southern Methodist Church hosts a major denominational gathering with the four general boards and College of Bishops meeting over the next two weeks. Today the general board of education begins, followed by sessions of the Sunday school and Epworth League boards, then the bishops’ session. The cornerstone ceremony for the men’s dormitory at Southern Methodist University occurs next Wednesday under the education board.
Secretary Bryan declines an invitation to speak in Sacramento saying he will confer with the governor and the legislature. He will return to Washington soon and may join a planned meeting with Governor Johnson and legislative leaders Monday to discuss the anti alien question and possible direct address to both houses.
New York authorities announce a Wagner centennial concert at the Hippodrome with 1,000 singers and 75 musicians. Mme Schumann-Heink will be soloist, and Mayor Gaynor will attend as guest of honor and deliver a brief address.
Washington April 26 Secretary Daniels ordered an additional examination on June 5 to fill as many Naval Academy vacancies as possible due to the June 30 expiration of the law allowing two appointments by each senator and representative.
A fast moving freight car collided with a Virginia and Southwestern passenger train on the Bristol yard of the Norfolk and Western railroad in Bristol Virginia April 26. Two cars were demolished and the passengers were severely shaken up but no injuries were reported.
Charleston April 26 Governor Hatfield issued a statement on the discrimination clause in his strike settlement proposal for Paint and Cabin Creek coal fields. He says discrimination is between employer and employee and beyond his control, urges miners to return Monday, and says he will not tolerate hostility or disturbance of the peace. A miners operator conference is pending to interpret the clause, with a May 10 wage conference planned for New River fields.
Washington April 26 The special committee recommends arrest of Charles E Glover millionaire president of Riggs Bank and his arraignment before the house on contempt charges arising from his assault on Representative Sims of Tennessee.
Nationally prominent women suffragists urged a constitutional amendment for women’s votes before the senate woman suffrage committee. Speakers included Mrs Anna Shaw Mrs LaFollette and Mrs Sutherland wife of a senator.
Washington April 26 speakers at the American Society of International Law urged the United States to submit the Panama canal tolls dispute to arbitration. They called for repealing the toll exemption act and pushing diplomatic negotiations for an amicable settlement. Hannis Taylor, former minister to Spain, linked the friendship with Britain to a settlement.
Lexington fans fill the city as the Kentucky Racing Association welcomes crowds to the track on April 26. Horse racing activity and spectator enthusiasm mark the opening events.

Pittsburg April 26 United States Senator Chas Townsend of Michigan addressed the American Republican Club at its Grant Day banquet. He urged a reunited party, praising past GOP record, contrasting treasury figures with current policy and tariff, and extending an ungloved hand to those who drifted from the party.
Vienna reports that Austria Hungary will delay decisive action until Monday for powers to act on Scutari. If no agreement is reached, Austria Hungary plans unilateral steps to vindicate prestige. Germany is said to have pledged support under all circumstances.

The scope includes production marketing and financing, plus cooperatives and social effects. The trip covers Italy Germany Denmark Sweden Belgium Holland France Britain Ireland and the Balkans, returning on July 18.
