Bluefield moves forward on Grant Street Bridge project
Concrete pouring to begin today on the 812 foot Grant Street Bridge linking the East End and North Side with Princeton Avenue and the downtown area. Built in 1941, the span was closed in June 2019 after state inspectors deemed it unsafe. The replacement received $10 million funding in October 2020, with the state DOT overseeing fast tracking.

Power substation under construction in Bluefield Virginia
A new 50 000 square foot Hockman Pike substation is under construction on 14 acres of Appalachian Power land near South College Avenue in Bluefield Virginia. It will reduce outages by boosting capacity for Bluestone Industrial Park and other businesses and ease load on the South Bluefield Substation toward the East River Mountain Tunnel project. Justice Companies dispute with Carter Bank renewed
Jay Justice, son of Gov. Jim Justice and CEO of Justice family properties, says an agreement with Carter Bank & Trust could not be reached. He notes a refinancing plan could retire seven of eleven loans and pay the bank over $250 million in cash, while four loans totaling about $57 million would be secured by collateral exceeding $825 million. The plan aims to retire all loans within four months, but the bank would lose more than $20 million annually in interest.
