Starling Enmity with Japanese Beetles Cited in Congress

Washington reports the starling is credited as a major bulwark against the spread of Japanese beetles. Congressional testimony notes starlings average 29 beetles per meal in infested New Jersey areas, outperforming robins and other birds. A farmer in southeastern Pennsylvania said a flock of starlings cleared his 13 acre corn field of beetles after they attacked the crop.

Mud Fork dam season rules set by Falls Mills club

Falls Mills Fishing club unveiled ahead of the coming season at Mud Fork dam. Brim crappie ring perch open May 15, bass open July 1. Bag size cut to 10 inches, overall bag limits unchanged at 20 per species early season and one bass per day thereafter. Directors to meet to plan year, focus on vegetation removal with Norfolk and Western Railway.

In Lindside West Virginia April 23 the Rev J C Spindler filled his regular appointment Sunday evening Oscar Spangler conducted the church service Miss Mary Riner will teach next Sunday The Woman s Work group of the Brethren church met April 14 with Mrs D W Boothe presiding Personal notes list Mrs Mary Broyles Mrs C W Warren at a church council in Roanoke and several locals visiting relatives and attending events including a miscellaneous shower for Ruthle Hines. Under the Sallean law women could not ascend the throne in France.

Narrows Club discusses 4-H camp plans and charity

Narrows Virginia April meeting covered Giles county 4-H progress and a camp project for about two hundred youth. Building plans include a main dining and recreation hall by August 1938 with tents for sleeping. Proceeds from Clover Heaven sales fund the project. Kiwanis support and eyeglass aid to five local children were noted along with a May 1 benefit program at Narrows High School featuring Beaver High School A Cappella choir.

Home Demonstration Club meeting at Glen Lyn with resignations

The Home Demonstration club met at Mrs B G Knight with Mrs E L Knight and Mrs O P Shell as hostesses. Mrs Cleve Thompson offered resignation as president and Mrs J E B Thompson will fill the unexpired term. Mrs Frank Duncan elected vice president. Demonstrations on meat loaf and angel food cake followed. The next meeting with Mrs Frank Duncan will feature decorating pottery.

Bridge Club Sees Largest Attendance Earn Half Holiday

The Bridge Club at Mrs. E. L. Knight’s home enjoyed decorations of Wac and spirea with a lay jender and white color scheme. Mrs. Sam Silverman hosted and Mr. W. J. Jessee served as sole substitute. Miss M Davis Adair won the score trophy and received handkerchiefs after an ice course and coffee. The club plans to meet next Tuesday with Mrs. C. KE Thigpen. The Woman's Missionary Society met Friday with Mrs. Co. Hylton as hostess and officers and committees reporting.

Rev Elton Dennis will preach this morning at eleven oclock and again tonight at seven thirty. A weekly prayer meeting is set for Wednesday night at seven thirty at the church with attendees invited.
