Matoaka Man Dies in Fall on Steps
A 32-year-old Matoaka man Harman Powell Saunders died Thursday afternoon from injuries after falling down his home's steps on Giotto Street. Police say he started to walk off the porch and fell, with death due to a broken neck. Saunders was taken to Matoaka by city ambulance and the body was sent to Lugo's Funeral.

Boy Loses Fingers In Exploding Lighter Accident

Bear Cub Chips In With Governor Lunch In Charleston
A 13 week old black bear cub from Monroe County ate lunch on Governor Hulett Smiths desk in Charleston. Conservation officer Dick Gilpin plans to move the cub to Buckhannon State Game Farm after a television debut and school visits. The cub was born on Peters Mountain, one cub captured by Virginia authorities, the other fleeing to West Virginia. The cub now drinks a milk based formula and warns that hunger may lead to a bite.

Bluefield arsonist sentenced for drive-in fire
A 19 year-old Bluefield man, Fred Fay Buchanan, was sentenced to one to ten years in the State Penitentiary at Moundsville after pleading guilty to arson in the $15,000 Bluefield Drive-In fire on Route 52. The breaking and entering charge was dropped. Buchanan admitted breaking into the drive-in, stealing about $100 from a juke box, and setting the fire.

Walter Hicks Blankenship of Narrows Virginia, 40, died after a timbering mishap just south of Pearisburg. A chestnut tree fell trapping him. he died en route to Giles Memorial Hospital.
