President Truman asked Congress to pass a compulsory medical insurance program to reduce human suffering. The plan, potentially costing 6 billion annually, would tax workers and employers to fund expanded medical services, hospitals, and more doctors and nurses.
Ten miners at Lehigh Navigation Coal No 6 colliery emerged from a 742 hour sit down protest while 6,000 fellow workers continued standoff actions. UMW chief John L Lewis met with organizers planning talks in Washington next week. Miner Andrew Yevcak said they will persist until their grievance is heard.
In Pulaski Virginia two bodies were recovered from Claytor Lake among four men missing after a boating trip. The dead are Phil lip E Marshall 54 and Marvell Owens 30 both residents of Pulaski. The other two men Leon Rockwell 46 and Bentley B Morris 38 remained missing as searchers from Christiansburg Marion Giles county Radford and Pulaski combed the lake in heavy rain. State Trooper Steve Shelton said the boat likely struck a log and capsized.
Kanawha county forest fires blamed on children making and using fire bombs. Small rocks wrapped in rags soaked in kerosene rolled down hillsides in the Briar Creek area near Kanawha State Forest. Patrolman Dennis McCormick extinguished a blaze and traced the device. investigation continues for charges.
About 10,000 Germans and 27 square miles of Germany became Dutch at midnight Saturday near the Dutch German frontier. Simultaneously 500 Germans and 10 square miles passed under Belgian flag. The transfers, part of a Western Powers agreement, total about 52 square miles to Holland Belgium and Luxembourg.

Sheriff Bays reports Arnold Parson and Guy Woodard arrested after a mining house was shot at and a powder storehouse attempt failed at the Orville Howard mines near St. Charles Virginia. Seven workers were present. bullets struck the mining house and explosive materials failed to detonate. The suspects posted $1000 bonds and face May 2 court.
Damage suits totaling 300000 dollars have been filed in federal court in Abingdon over coal mine violence in Buchanan county. Plaintiffs Paul B. Melvin of North Carolina and William P. Herron of New York allege they were beaten at Gilliam and Hodgin strip mine on April 21, 1948 by a mob including United Mine Workers members.

A Grundy Virginia sawmill owned by A. and B. Lumber was destroyed by fire from an undetermined source near the left fork of Little Prater Creek. The Grundy fire department saved most of the lumber stock. damage estimate not yet available.
A Texas National Guard pilot Maj. Rafael Joseffy was killed when his F-51 fighter crashed on a hill near Charleston West Virginia in heavy rain. The crash occurred about 10 am after departing Kanawha airport en route to Orchard Field Chicago. An army investigation from Lockbourne Field launched a probe.
Testimony in a Communist conspiracy trial cites Maryland party officials claiming Russia could invade the United States via Alaska and Canada in 1945. Albert Lannon allegedly urged sabotage and demoralization if war with the U S occurred, while asserting American prosperity would curb revolution. The Federal Reserve board extended the maximum installment period to 24 months and reduced the down payment to 10 percent on most items excluding automobiles effective April 27.
