Gov. Jim Justice announces that West Virginia students will not return to physical classrooms this school year. He cites safety, remote learning needs, and continued student feeding, with plans to resume in 2020-21 and hold graduations later in the summer for seniors.
Virginia releases county by county COVID data for the Southwest region Abingdon Wythe and Washington counties report most cases with eight and 29 positives respectively. Scott Wise and other counties show lower totals while Buchanan Grundy and Tazewell records are noted. Overall Virginia totals reach 9630 cases 1581 hospitalizations and 324 deaths.
Two state legislators announce plans to curb Governor Justice's COVID 19 executive orders amid concerns they may violate First Amendment rights to assemble and associate. Delegates Larry D. Kump and Tom Bibby propose changes to West Virginia law, including time limits on orders unless approved by a legislative majority.
One new coronavirus case brings Mercer County total to nine with seven recovered. Sanitarian Matthew Bragg said contacts are identified and self isolating. No deaths reported. 12 test results pending. Residents urged to maintain six foot distancing and wash hands for 20 seconds. Neighboring McDowell County reports ongoing cases.
