Friday reports said former President Richard Nixon remained in a life threatening coma at New York Hospital three days after a major stroke. His family stayed by his side as doctors released few details on his treatment or condition.
The Women’s Group of Christ Episcopal Church on Duhring Street Bluefield prepares sandwiches for a bake sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds go to the Food Pantry and other worthy projects.
Today from morning to 4 pm a truck will collect scrap aluminum cans and foil at the Bluefield Virginia municipal parking lot beside the Bank of Tazewell County. The aluminum will be taken to Reynolds Recycling in Bluefield West Virginia for a special April 23 payout, offering an extra penny per pound if marked for the Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs Project Camp Easter Seal East. Reynolds will issue checks for all aluminum turned in during April 18 to 23 if marked for the VFWC project.

Earth Day activities begin with a schoolwide march and a plan to adopt 35 whales. Assistant principal Nyoka Money notes students named the whales and will receive monthly updates. A 90 foot plastic whale replica is on display, and recycling contests and eco art projects are planned.
Dream grows into Bluefield Little League, formed March 1993, with Higginbotham Field dedication on May 1, 1993. Norfolk Southern Railway graded a third field, aided by BSC surveying crews and volunteers. Work continues on the main field and T ball field ahead of the season.
Princeton an escape case ends with Lee Workman pleading guilty to one count of felony escape. He receives a one to five year sentence to be served after finishing a 10 year aggravated robbery term. Other escapees Moore Hicks and Myers have pleaded guilty and were sentenced.
Tazewell County Public Service Authority turns to the attorney general for advice on refunds for non-users allegedly overcharged. The board, amid a resignation controversy over former attorney Thornton Newton, reviews procedures and potential refunds under Virginia code 15.1-1261. Dennis Simmons appointed temporary county attorney to advise PSA and board of supervisors on disclosure and conflicts while a new attorney is sought.
Daily Telegraph Executive Editor Tom Colley receives commendation from U S Sen Robert Byrd for backing a West Virginia legislature joint resolution on literacy. Byrd urges full printing of the resolution and highlights the national crisis of illiteracy impacting social and national security.
