Mrs. Lillian Pickering 82 widow of J H Pickering died Wednesday afternoon at her home near Glenwood. Funeral services were conducted at 3 o'clock this afternoon at New Hope Methodist Church with Rev Z F Mayberry and Rev L W Rhody in charge. Interment followed at Monte Vista cemetery with the body resting at the church from 2 o'clock.
Word has been received of the death of Ernest Melvin of Bristol Virginia at his home Wednesday night after months of ill health. He is survived by his wife and three sons and brothers and sisters including John Melvin Bettie Helton Miss Sarah Melvin and M C Melvin of Bristol. An older brother George Melvin died April 9 in Bristol. Mr and Mrs M C Melvin left yesterday to attend the funeral and burial services.
Larkin Agnew of Amonate Virginia died Wednesday night while being taken to Clinch Valley clinic after a heart attack. He is survived by his wife the former Miss Lillie Kitterman and a daughter Mrs Harold Dunford of Amonate, plus several brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at Amonate church at 9 am Sunday with burial at Floyd, Virginia at 3 pm Sunday.
Army Air Corps private seen on short leave with his parents Mr and Mrs J H Dudley at their home on Tazewell avenue Virginia side.
The War Production Board rejected the Chicago Tribune request for 22,872 tons of newsprint to start a Milwaukee daily. The letter said editorial policy and political viewpoints are not considered in allocation decisions and warned against censorship.
Lieut Bill Dudley former Graham high school standout and all American in football arrived home this week after receiving a commission as Second Lieutenant in the U S Army.
The War Department reports three West Virginians wounded in the Mediterranean and a fourth in Europe. It also lists four West Virginia soldiers killed: Lt. Leonard L. Lowder in England on March 6, Sgt. Robert G. Lutes, Staff Sgt. Vernon W. Moses, Pvt. Arlin L. Crisco, Sgt. Virgil L. Eckles, Staff Sgt. Lee Vance, Staff Sgt. James H. Fleming, and Pfc. Marvin W. Hancock.
The Better Service Club of Bluefield plans an 8 PM meeting at Ramsey School auditorium. Program features include talks by F Morton Wagner Mercer county criminal court judge and J H Kinzel assistant trainmaster, plus musical selections by Bluefield State Teachers College ensemble, with R T Waters as chairman.

New Allied air offensive in spring and summer months lights bases after 9 p m as 9 000 tons of bombs fall on Nazi targets in a 30hour window. American Marauders join RAF craft against occupied France with 150 planes and 300 tons of bombs amid fighter support from Spitfires and Typhoons. Plovdiv railyards near Sofia also attacked as part of the broad offensive.
The OPA lifts many essential motorist restrictions and ends the rationing recapture. Pleasure driving ban in the east was removed, with last September the key bright spot. About 1,500 new automobiles priced at 2500 or more released, the only car rationing easing. Shoes loosened for women novelty and children’s low priced pairs will be off ration lists temporarily from May 1.
Charleston West Virginia April 20 the secretary of state's office began distribution of decorators tape to correct permanent voter registration rolls. Tape had been in short supply for three months and a high priority rating was obtained from the war production board to meet primary requests. The tape blocks out old addresses and can be removed without destroying the original address.
John H. Peatrie of Bishop Virginia was treated at Bluefield sanitarium for back injuries from an accident at Pocahontas Fuel Company mine in Bishop. He rolled between a motor and the mine side. condition not serious, admitted early yesterday.
Eighty service men, five with wives, from eighteen states visited the Service Men's club yesterday. Donations included eggs from Mrs. Caffee, pies from Mrs. Johnson, $10 from Mrs. Mary Reynold, and $5 from Mountain City lodge No. 85. Mrs. H. T. Stafford led the committee with help from multiple club members.
Captain J William Cummins of Wheeling Republican candidate for attorney general toured southern West Virginia counties. A longtime lawyer and former state legislator he spoke with Republican leaders in Bluefield and visited Princeton. He served in World War I as a first lieutenant and now holds the rank of captain in the Army Air Corps on inactive duty.
Pvt Glenn A Lester wife at Pageton earned paratrooper wings after four weeks of jump training with five jumps including a night tactical jump. First Lt John Astor Rife son of Mr and Mrs Gus Rife of Slate Va received silver wings after graduating Pecos Army Air Field Texas where he trained as a student officer. Lieut Rife a Lees McRae College graduate. Pvt Jesse Fletcher returned to base from a 21 day furlough spent with wife and relatives in Bluefield. Three Fletcher brothers serve in the armed forces. Naval aviation cadet Joseph P Ruddell of Bluefield completed an 11 week pre flight course at Chapel Hill and starts primary flight training at Bunker Hill Indiana. Cadet Buddell attended Beaver High and Bluefield College and led K O A fraternity at Bluefield College.
A heavy explosion at Skoltergrunn quay in Bergen Norway killed 43 people and injured many others. The fire spread in strong winds but was controlled after about two hours. Bergen FNevant offices Nordenfjeldske coal company offices and Haakon hall in Bergen castle suffered damage.
New York draft boards were told they could resume induction of men 26 years old and over who are not contributing to war support activities. Induction of all men in that age group was halted April 11 pending nationwide regulation clarification, Col. Arthur V. McDermott, city selective service director, announced.
The War Manpower Committee reports millions of eligible men are idle or deferable. It cites 3,623,000 4-Fs and 1,000,000 potential gains from reclassifications, plus 2,650,000 occupational deferrals and 17,000,000 men aged 38 to 45. It urges controls to pull able men into war work and notes the Navy and War Departments resist changes.
Carrier planes shelled airfields and dispersal zones with 34 tons of explosives in raids coordinated with American bombers from central Pacific bases on Truk and Ponape. Adm. Chester W. Nimitz announced the operation as six planes failed to return, including losses over Rabaul during a 100 ton bombing strike on Tuesday.

Roanoke visitor Harry Haffen plans monthly stays of at least one week and directs inquiries to West Virginian hotel or P. O. Box 2455 Roanoke Va. The Vogue advertises seasonable sale items including suits coats maternity dresses and summer accessories with discounts and new arrivals. Cox's promotes seeds moth proofing and cleaning products.

A collision at the Princeton avenue Federal street intersection yesterday afternoon involved a Flor ence Maskello automobile from Princeton and an Atlantic Greyhound bus bound for Charleston. The car, stopped for a light, was dragged onto the sidewalk by the bus driven by B F Wicker. No injuries were reported to any occupants.
London reports Hitler marked his 55th birthday in silence while German radio reflected rising belief the Allied invasion looms. Dispatches from Sweden and Switzerland cite von Rundstedt massing troops along the Atlantic Wall for an invasion test, with May as the probable timeframe. Goebbels defends war leadership saying we have burned our bridge and there is no going back. Berlin ruins described in Stockholm dispatches.
The report notes Michigan's delegate mix from Minnesota Nebraska and Wisconsin with one claim from Nebraska. Gov Griswold, up for a third term, has six pledges from his home state of Nika and MacArthur is pledged three from Wisconsin. Griswold may not seek vice presidency but allies expect he could. The Fireproof Products company of Charleston filed a $100,000 suit in federal district court against Detroit Steel Products company and its subsidiary Fenestra Construction company both of Detroit. The Charleston firm alleges breach of contract over commissions for sale of acts manufactured by Detroit and field services of Fenestra for Carnegie Illinois Steel at the South Charleston naval ordnance plant in March 1941. It claims acting under a franchise as exclusive agent for Detroit in several West Virginia counties.
At Fort Custer Michigan on April 20 a few hundred Afrika corps and Luftwaffe POWs celebrated Adolf Hitler’s 55th birthday after work hours with an inside band concert. Prisoner leaders had presented a special request to Maj. E F Richter the camp commander. A former Berlin hotel orchestra leader led the foreign band.
