Pocahontas Virginia April 20. A proposal ends the Lions club versus Chamber of commerce clash over Nature's Air Conditioned City. The chamber keeps the slogan while the Lions consult Old Timer on weather before outdoor events to avoid mishaps and confusion.
Mrs Sam W Greene hosted the Catherine Vance circle at her home Thursday evening. During the social hour she served refreshments to several guests including visitor Mrs L Bragg. The next meeting will gather at Mrs H F Hancock’s home.
Hospitals nationwide observe National Hospital Day on May 12 to highlight un ceasing hospital work and the fight against disease. Open houses run from 2 to 5 p.m. in Bluefield area hospitals with Florence Nightingale’s birthday noted as the reason for the date.
Commander Dave Millner announces American Legion Post 14 Pocahontas will book an early June showing of a film from Cosmopolitan Shows owned by C. E. Barfield of Macon Georgia. Barfield, a physician and UVA classmate of Edwin Jones, brother of the late James Ellwood Jones, also was linked with Bellevue Hospital in New York.
A fifty year census of Pocahontas cemetery burials shows 5151 recorded interments from 1890 to present with peak activity in 1906 at 239 burials and 186 the following year. Burial rates decline after 1920 due to safety measures and rescue training. The Pocahontas Cemetery association trustees met March 9 1908 electing Jas W Bailey as secretary treasurer and noting the deed to the town with no overhead by the town council.
For two weeks curious townsfolk watched Gibo the catarrhine monkey amuse and escape his owner W. G. Forester along Laurel Creek. The nimble creature roams streets, teases a dog named Kingfish, and flits through trees before posing on a chimney edge and grimacing at onlookers.
The Rev R J Tyler, longtime pastor now at Grundy, has been called to serve Boissevain Baptist church which has lacked a resident pastor since January 1. He previously led Calvary Baptist Bluefield West Virginia and the church at Keystone and is now in his second term at Grundy.
Mrs Donnie Whitson left for New York Friday after a two week business trip. She was accompanied by Mrs A V Sproles who will be her guest until the first of May.
The Bible class of Mrs. J K Peters at the Methodist church held its monthly meeting Thursday at the home of Mrs. William Pedigo with joint hostesses Mrs. Bill Atkins Mrs. Jess Lambert and Mrs. Ellis Whitt. Guests enjoyed bingo with prizes won by Mrs. Bowling Henderson Miss Ruth Griffith and Mrs. Jess Lambert. Refreshments were served to about twenty five guests.
Mrs Hampton Crawford hosted the Tuesday night Bridge club with a salad course for members and guests. Mrs John S Dennen won the high score prize while the guest prize went to Mrs Donnie Whitson.
The Elkhorn high school senior class presents The College Hobo on Thursday April 25 in the high school auditorium under the direction of Mrs. Edna Lee Miller. Lead cast includes Nancy Sproles Mary McNulty and Grieve Forster.
Bridge at the Ballard home Wednesday afternoon featured hostesses Mrs. H. H. Ballard Mrs. C. C. Haga and Mrs. H. W. Franklin. High prize went to Mrs. Donnie Whitson, bingo to Mrs. W. A. Bishop, guest prize to Mrs. Oscar Van Boenign of Pekin Illinois, with Mrs. Donnie Whitson and Miss Eleanor Winter noted among attendees.
Mr and Mrs Oscar Van Boening of Pekin Illinois departed Friday after a week with Mrs German and her husband W J German They have wintered in St Petersburg Florida since January 1 Mrs Van Boening known previously as Miss Mary German has often visited the Germans home
The Pocahontas Woman's club appointed Mrs. Frank McMomas Mrs. C. C. Hindley and Mrs. H. H. Ballard as delegates to the Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs to be held at Old Point Comfort.
The Laymen's League met Thursday at the Episcopal rectory chaired by C. G. Hoffman. A committee will gauge attendance and arrange transportation to the May 20 meeting in Lexington. Dr Archibald Rutledge of South Carolina will speak, and Oscar Van Boening praised Southern hospitality and the diverse League membership.
A request to provide a program for Columbia network broadcast via Station WB Roanoke on Thursday April 25. The item notes a fifteen minute slot for the choral group.
A choral program begins at 2 15 p m featuring six numbers by the chorus. Solo performances will be given by Mrs H B Crawford and Mrs D O Helms. The chorus includes ten sopranos led by director Mrs H T Davis and ten altos including Mrs Bertok and Mrs Butt. Pianist is Mrs R S Vawter.

Evening service 7 30 p m led by Rev L W Pierce with quarterly conference to follow. Junior and young people meet 6 30 p m. choir to sing. Board of stewards meet Tuesday 7 30 p m.
St Elizabeth Catholic Church schedules mass at 8 30 a m led by Father J A Mc Nulty. The St Elizabeths guild will meet Thursday night April 25 at the home of Mrs John Drosic.
Sunday school starts at 10 o clock led by superintendent Hampton Crawford. Morning service follows at 11 o clock with Edward W. Hughes serving as rector.

The Loyalty Bible class taught by Mrs. C. M. Fisher gathered in the church day school annex on Thursday evening. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Kelly Sult's group.
Miss Virginia Douthat and Miss Harriet Garnet were absent due to illness last week. Mrs. Clarence Haga and Mrs. Frank McComas substituted. Birth announcements note several newborns to local families with dates in April including Carter Miller Price and Bogle households.
Mrs D O Helms a talented singer will perform at Graham High School on Friday April 26 accompanying by Mrs Taylor Davis at the piano. The event marks the selection of a princess from Tazewell County for the Bristol Dogwood festival.
Ben T. Graham Jr has accepted a position with Kingston Coal Company at Hemphill. He graduated last year.
Mrs. Junius Ellett, president of the Pocahontas Woman's club, will give a short talk over WBDJ Roanoke Thursday April 25. The item also notes visitors and local social events including visits to Mary Baldwin College Staunton and gatherings in Roanoke and Jarrett Virginia.
The Jenkinsones West Virginia Parent Teacher Association met Tuesday at 7:30 PM in the school auditorium. The second grade staged the program led by Miss Mildred Whitehead. Elected for 1940 1941 were President Mrs P F Casimo Vice President H S Basham Secretary Mrs W C Hall Treasurer Mrs Frank Shelton.
Mary Helen Dailey and Jack Allen Owens wed in Pearisburg Virginia on January 7 1939. Rev J E Guthrie officiated before witnesses Ward Miles and spouse of Oceana West Virginia. Mary Helen teaches Yukon grade school. Jack Owens a Concord College junior in physical education. They plan to live with the Daileys this summer.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Spence Mr and Mrs H F Hancock Miss Dorothy Buchanan Miss Lillian Gravely Miss Beatrice Perdue and Miss Irene Posich attended a Pocahontas gathering of store men and picture show staff Thursday evening with Adrian Vance Jim mie Hughes H M Walker Sam W Greene Bill Crockett John Fox Tom Sulic and Roy Thomas present.
The Ella Sue Wagner circle met Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. J. B. Whitehead. The hostess, assisted by her daughter Miss Mildred, served a dainty refreshment plate.
Mrs. Harry E. Atkinson was the honoree at a Friday night stork shower hosted by Mrs. J. E. Pressley. A large crowd attended and presented numerous dainty gifts before refreshments were served.
Mr and Mrs Robert L Likens and son Bobbie of Coalwood visited Mr and Mrs H F Hancock on Sunday. Dr and Mrs C W Vick spent Sunday in Roanoke visiting daughter Eugenia Vick. Bill Crockett spent the week at home in Bluefield. Mrs E W Alley attended funeral in Honaker for uncle G R Counts. Betty Bryant of Bluefield spent weekend with aunt Dorothy Buchanan. Raymond Murphy of Florence visited his parents here. Louise Alley with Helen WhiteElsie Beckman Stuart Moore Eugene Hammond attended Huntington press meeting. Alma Elizabeth Carver RN of St Luke's Bluefield arrived to begin duty with C W Vick and Dr J H Murry. Clarence Fox and wife visited in Bluefield Tuesday. Ferne Murphy and Mrs Gene Pressley shopped in Bluefield Saturday.
The Eckman Methodist church Women’s Missionary society hosted a stork shower at Mrs. C. G. Atkinson’s home honoring Mrs. C. L. Nester. Joint hostess was Mrs. J. L. King. Guests included Mrs. Walker Nester of Virginia and many local members who sent gifts if unable to attend.
J. W. Largin and several women including Mrs Kathryn E. Smith Miss Gertrude Smith Miss Ethel White Miss Alice Bias Mrs Violet Dillard and Mrs W P Bennett attended and the honoree received many lovely gifts at the celebration.
The regular monthly meeting of the Parent Teachers association was held Tuesday night. Mrs C A Brown reported on a regional instruction school held at Logan on April 6. The main speaker was Mrs William McClaugherty of Bluefield on Character Building. Mrs W T Blankenship spoke on the school levy. New officers elected: President Helen Lambert, vice president C A Brown, secretary Gertrude Smith, treasurer W A Christie. Visitors included Mrs McClaugherty and Mr and Mrs J O Williams.
The Young Business Women’s circle of the Missionary society surprised Mrs. Clara Mae Williams with a stork shower Monday night at her residence. Guests included Mrs. Tabor Mrs. D. M. Gillies Mrs. B. E. Mitchell and many others who exchanged gifts for the honoree. Several senders who could not attend were listed among the attendees.
A Tom Thumb circus is scheduled at the Eckman Theatre on April 29 at 8 p.m. The event promises brief acts suitable for families and children.
A play titled Polly's Troubles will be staged at the Eckman theatre on May 11. Pupils from the intermove grades of the grade school will take parts in the production.
Miss Ruby Gartner of Charleston accepts a nursing post with Pocahontas Fuel at Eckman and moves in with Mr and Mrs Oya and family. Mrs B M Hill has returned.
