United Fuel Gas begins drilling on the first Mercer county well about four miles from Bluefield on Red Oak Ridge near Littlesburg. More than 500 leases total. United Fuel Gas holds about 380. Geologists expect gas sands under the Abbs Valley anticline may extend into Mercer. first drill depth targeted at 3,600 feet.
