Washington April 19 1920 reports describe floods across 76 towns as water levels rise and levees fail. President Coolidge hosts Hoover at breakfast to quell cabinet talk while Kellogg resignation hints circulate.
At a Chesapeake and Ohio stockholders meeting in Richmond the purchase of the Erie and Pere Marquette railroads was approved 126 498 to 10 437. The plan would consolidate the lines under C O ownership to broaden the system and expand operations. Opponents urged independent accounting of the firms from 1923 onward and objected to the Van Sweringen controlled shares.
Morgantown West Virginia April 19 The Amalgamated operators say labor supply in Monongalia County coalfields is back to pre strike levels while United Mine Workers counter that output is greatly reduced. D H Pape of the Monongahela Coal Operators Association notes the strike has not affected labor supply and markets for coal are weak. Sanford Snyder of the United Mine Workers claims output is substantially curtailed. Hazard mine at Chartierstown reopen on April 1 on a non union basis with 102 men cleaning up prior to resuming operations. The mine normally employs about 160 men and had operated under union wage scales for years.
HH' Livingston named the prettiest girl at Marshall College in Huntington West Virginia. She says she will not go into the movies now and plans to marry after two more years of college.
Hankow faction dismisses Chiang Kai-Shek as head of Cantonese armies and appoints Feng Yu-Haelang as his successor. Tang Seng-Chi named associate generalissimo and ordered to attack Chiang. Relations with Nanking and Shanghai severed as power struggle erupts.
Paul Kelly held for investigation after the death of Ray Raymond in Hollywood. Raymond and Kelly fought when Kelly admitted love for Dorothy MacKay, the actress wife of Raymond. A maid witnessed the night, and detectives noted Raymond returned from a tour with a musical comedy company prior to the incident. Kelly had appeared in films including Special Delivery and Slide, Kelly, Slide.
The Kokomo Steel and Wire company of Kokomo Indiana merges with the COA TM& Price Steel company of Indianapolis and the Superior Sheet Steel company of Canton Ohio under one corporate group announced today in Canton Ohio.
A persistent rumor from Washington alleges President Coolidge and Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover are not in harmony. The chatter says Hoover aspires to a four year term at the White House, challenging Coolidge.
New York April 19 Warned not to talk about the case nor read newspapers the jury in the Snyder case went to his home at Elmhurst tonight. The jury to try Mrs Ruth Brown Snyder and Henry Judd Gray charged with the murder of Albert Snyder consisted of one man of the necessary twelve. Of 37 prospective jurors examined today only one William E Young press agent for a Broadway hotel proved satisfactory to the district attorney and attorneys for the defendants. Young automatically became foreman.
Lloyd W Bertrand a 32 year old Cleveland air mail pilot was named co pilot and navigator of the Wright Bellanca monoplane for the New York to Paris flight. The appointment was confirmed by Charles A Levine chairman of the Columbia Aircraft corporation.
Four Royal Air Force members, including two officers, were killed when a Vickers bomber crashed at East Church Kent today. The accident occurred on April 19 and investigation is ongoing.
New York April 19 reports that Telephon Laboratory experiments from Whippany New Jersey to New York demonstrated speech and image transmitted on one wavelength. Dr Herbert Ives and L. Nelson declared success using a single radio set and two receivers to reduce distortion with a band equal to several telephone conversations. The first public TV demo on April 7 used separate wires and radio paths.
Detroit April 19 chaos followed Aaron Sapiro libel suit against Henry Ford. Court adjourned to Thursday as Ford counsel cites illness of Senator James A. Reed. Ford detectives allegedly meddled with jurors and two secret conferences occurred with Judge Raymond. Miller, a real estate dealer, held by federal investigators amid juror conduct scrutiny. Reed recovered from indigestion after returning from Washington.

Bond measures fail and victories occur for a new fire station and water board seats. An independent school district wins a $1,000,000 school bond issue with strong turnout and heated district lines.
Morgantown April 19. A formal charge of murder was placed against James Drakeford a Negro sought by police when Walter Johnson a Negro died from gun wounds as a result of a fight Monday night over a gallon of moonshine liquor. Police in adjoining cities have been asked to watch for Drakeford.
Washington reports a Chicago area disaster as a twister devastates 12 towns and leaves 40 dead. The Red Cross National Headquarters mobilizes relief funds and calls for tents blankets and supplies from chapters nationwide to aid flood victims in the Mississippi Valley.
The West Virginia House of Delegates advanced the water power bill with amendments from the judiciary committee and others. A key change allows the governor to act with the public service commission on licensing, and rates would be based on actual invested money rather than replacement value.
John Madden aged 42 died this afternoon when his auto rolled over a curve and plunged over an embankment near Fairmont West Virginia. His son Frank, 17, suffered a broken arm and other injuries. He was the son of Nelson Madden of Burning Springs.
Rome April 1. The Vatican informed the Associated Press it has no information about Governor Alfred E Smith's declaration on church state relations. The Holy See would not comment on this or similar matters affecting American politics as such questions are internal US concerns.

Communities like Carrollton Huffalo Hart Cornland Centerville Chestnut and Quincy suffered fatalities and major property damage as Red Cross units and doctors rushed to the stricken areas.
Marian Dawes daughter of William R. Dawes waited in Champaign for bridesmaids to meet for her April 30 Chicago wedding. Meanwhile Bilderback eloped with Miss Gertrude Sergeant, a University of Illinois instructor, after their Urbana courthouse marriage. Miss Dawes and Bilderback are Yale and Wellesley graduates, respectively. Mae West faces possible workhouse play after Broadway cleanup.
