Mercer County area schools report continued student losses with 8231 current pupils, down from 8415 a year earlier and from 8458 five years ago. Long-term population trends, homeschooling and private schools further affect public enrollment, with hundreds of homeschool students cited.
Mickey Pellillo leads volunteers in removing Hurricane Helene fallen trees from Bluefield City Park trails. About 300 trees have been cleared, with 50 more to go as crews reopen the Family Friendly Trail and refill flooded sections with gravel. The effort began last October and involves student helpers and Wade Center teams.
Concord University named Bethany Meighen its 18th president, succeeding retirementing Dr. Kendra Boggess. Meighen comes from the UNC System where she was Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs and chief student affairs officer coordinating with the UNC System Office and 17 campuses.
Teachers at Timberwood Elementary anticipate new classrooms and a large gymnasium, cafeteria, elevator, and bright, windowed classrooms as Mercer County moves to modernize its aging school buildings. Public preview Tuesday showcased the nearing completion of the up-to-date facility.
