The Republican led House passed a broad labor bill 308 to 107 to curb strikes and restrict union activities delaying major provisions. Senate debate looms as Taft and other Republicans push for amendments and a milder version moves forward.
Six Virginia representatives voted for the labor bill sent to the senate on April 17. The yes votes were Almonca Drewry Gary Harrison Hardy and Stanley. Flanan voted against it Bland was not recorded.
The 185-foot motor tug Great Isaac sank in 13 fathoms about 10 miles southeast of Barnegat after a fog fatal collision with the Norwegian freighter Bandeirante. Ten crew abandoned ship and were taken to New York aboard Bandeirante after the Cooley and Trinidad head tugs responded.
Beckley West Virginia April 17 Organization of the Smokeless Coal Bureau to replace the funct bituminous coal producers board No. 7 started today by operators from five coal fields. Chairman P M Snyder Jr Mount Hope said the bureau will be in operation next month and will embrace the Winding Gulf New River Pocahontas Tug River Greenbrier and Kanawha fields. He explained the board was established as a coal pricing unit under the office of price administration and solid fuels administration and the reorganization was needed due to their demise.

NFTW president Beirne says talks aim to settle this week with wage increases and arbitration. Some non dial calls lifted and limited long distance calls accepted as government waits for withdrawals and agreement.
Lake Success N Y April 17 Canada pressed for a direct detailed answer from Russia on international atomic inspection. General McNaughton asked if Russia would accept inspections by agents recruited from many nations with access to all signatories. Gromyko delayed replying, stating no readiness for a detailed personnel discussion.

A man attempted a hold-up at the Granada theater around 9:30 last night but was foiled when Orvil Wallace bought a ticket at the box office as the robber demanded the receipts. The suspect, described as 5 6, 140 pounds with dark hair and a light beard, fled after Wallace noticed the man kept a hand in his pocket.
