Construction bids approved for new Bluefield primary school
Mercer County School Board OKs contracts for a 12.5 million Bluefield primary school to replace Whitethorm and Memorial on 9.5 acres beside Bluefield High. Groundbreaking tentatively set for May 30 with SBA funding of 10.7 million awaiting final approval. Work may begin by May 1 with bids awarded separately for trades, electrical, plumbing HVAC, kitchen, and fire protection.

One Dead in Airport Road Two-Vehicle Crash Near Brushfork
A two-vehicle collision on Route 123 between Brushfork and Mercer County Airport left one man in his early 20s dead and a male and a juvenile seriously injured. The driver of the passenger car died. the pickup occupants were hospitalized. The crash, about 7 am, involved crossing the center line and remains under investigation by Lt. L B Murphy.

Probable cause found in officer assault case in Mercer County
Mercer County magistrate ruled probable cause exists in the assault and fleeing case of Dallas Wayne Conley 27 charging two counts of malicious assault and fleeing with reckless indifference. Testimony described a high speed chase after deputies were alerted by a 911 call from Bethany Conley about threats to her and her child. The hearing forwarded both charges to the Mercer County Grand Jury.

Mercer County man Joseph William Smith, 24, pleaded guilty to fleeing in a vehicle causing bodily injury in a case tied to the May 2017 pursuit that killed Bluefield Police Lt. Aaron Crook.
