WV jail staffing improves as National Guard support winds down
West Virginia officials report jail staffing is improving and the state plans to end National Guard assistance. Ninety eight guardsmen remain, down from 413, with 291 correctional officers and 49 non uniformed hires added since January. By mid May five guardsmen will stay only for admin work as plan to close jails to Guard aid progresses.

Area children plant trees in Bluefield for Earth Day
The Craft Memorial Library in Bluefield partners with Neighborhood Forest to give Mercer County kids trees for Earth Day on April 22. Twenty six children signed up as the library joins a program that has planted over 130,000 trees with families and schools.
