Buchanan County Virginia reports 106 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday marking a significant one day rise. Mercer McDowell and Tazewell counties reported no new infections while West Virginia records its 10th death a 62 year old Marion County man.

Local pantries, fire dept to receive $10,000 CIP grant
The Community Foundation of the Virginias awards $10,000 grants to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Food Pantry in Bluefield Tender Mercies Ministries in Princeton and the Princeton Fire Department to cover outbreak costs from COVID-19. Executive Director James Shott says funds reimburse pandemic related expenses and support increased food needs. Sacred Heart and Tender Mercies plan to buy more food to meet higher demand.

Tazewell leaders oppose Virginia inmate early release plan
Tazewell County officials fear a proposed plan to release nearly 2000 inmates early would strain probation and risk domestic violence victims. Governor Northam proposed budget amendments granting DOC authority to release inmates with year or less left, based on good behavior and public safety. If approved by the General Assembly in the April session, releases could begin at Pocahontas State facility.

Mercer Health Dept to Begin Drive Through Testing
Mercer County Health Department in Green Valley will offer drive through coronavirus testing starting Thursday and every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 2 pm. Call ahead for interviewing and obtain a testing ID, time, and date. Princeton Community Hospital also provides drive through testing at Parkview Center 10 am to 2 pm weekdays with physician order and in-house testing now available.
