McDowell County board of education issued a proclamation calling for a countywide vote at the May 14 primary on a new three year school levy to replace the expiring levy. The plan outlines sliding scale rates by class and funds fifteen proposed projects including junior highs, high schools, and buses totaling 377000 dollars with 105000 from the permanent improvement fund and 272000 from the levy.

Injury 13 Fatal to Mohawk Man in 1940 McDowell Death List
Hobart Allen, 41, of near Mohawk, died in Williamson hospital from injuries from a Saturday crash on U S Route 52 near Saeger. His car collided with one driven by Lewis Riffe of Hanover. Riffe, charged with manslaughter, posted bond. Allen leaves a widow, five children, and two brothers. Funeral services set for today at 2 p.m. with I O O F and Tug Valley Encampment members involved.

West Coast child denied plea to attend funeral
An 11 year old girl named Chloe was refused permission to attend the funeral of her mother Leticia Davis and her two sisters and brother killed in a family tragedy. A coroner jury ruled Davis killed the children with a hammer and then took her own life. Chloe witnessed the killings but offered no emotion and did not contest the denial.

Pineville April 11 constable Gunter testified at his murder trial that the December killing of Wilbur Pack Jr. at Oceana was purely accidental. He said he struck intending only to hit Pack in the head with the weapon.

Nearly 700 workers desert their tools at Huntington West Virginia for a $2.5 million federal housing project amid an intra union dispute. Candidates Attack Public Aid Setup in West Virginia
Charleston, April 11. State Senator J Buhl Shahan and Delegate John W Bosworth denounced the Democratic administration for a failed public aid program. They urged a $40 monthly pension for those over 60 and cited a state average pension far below the national average.
