Cape Kennedy AP A $50 million Orbiting Astronomical Observatory fails when its primary battery overheats and degrades, ending the space telescope mission after a brief two days in a 5004 mile high orbit. Ground teams switch to secondary power but the failures propagate and telemetry is lost. The crash follows another launch mishap at Cape Kennedy involving an Atlas-Centaur rocket that week.

A 21 year old Army corporal from New York William Murphy was charged with murdering his former sweetheart Sue Proeber in Palatine after a December quarrel. An autopsy showed she was pregnant. Murphy and his bride Lenore Wagner waited outside the interrogation room as he signed a statement.

The crash occurred after refueling at 4 18 p m and the craft rolled 100 feet before bursting into flames.
