A crowd of over 15 000 packed Bluefield streets for the Region VIII band festival with 23 bands from southern West Virginia and Northern Virginia auditioning for state meet spots in Huntington on May 5 6 7. Bands performed at Ramsey Auditorium then marched a mile plus parade to the stadium for final judging and honors.
The Bluefield parade along Mercer street to North street drew an estimated 15 000 spectators. Twelve high school and two junior high bands were rated superior or excellent for Huntington state meet qualification. Paul Yoder judged bands with out of state officials noting tone intonation technique and stage display.
A full page of pictures from the region eight band festival is featured on page seven of this morning's Daily Telegraph, showcasing ensembles and performers.

In Poulan Georgia 89 year old former Michigan governor Rueg Ged Chase Osborn wed his long time assistant and adopted daughter Stella nova in a bedside ceremony at his home Possum Poke. The adoption was dissolved in Sylvester Superior Court and the ceremony followed at 5 p m Eastern Time with Rev W C Smith officiating. Stella nova formerly Stella Lee Blunt of Hamilton Ontario aged 55 said the adoption removal was sentimental and not without precedent.
Desperate rescuers inch a shaft down beyond 100 feet and drill through the wall of an abandoned well to reach three year old Kathy Fiscus trapped 94 to 104 feet below ground. Workers reported a motionless dress at 57 feet. hope remains with her mother and physician.
