Commerce Dept Cuts List of Draft Deferment Activities

Washington April 7 The commerce department issued a revised list of essential activities to guide draft deferments for military service. The new list covers 25 activity types from aircraft production to educational and research services, narrowing the earlier 72-item list issued last August. The move aims to guide selective service rather than bind it, with exclusions including printing publishing government retail trade banking real estate tobacco textiles and motion pictures. Secretary Sawyer stressed the list is not for priorities allocations or rationing and serves only to guide manpower for the armed forces.

Costello And Adonis May Go To Jail

New York April 7 Randolph Halley chief counsel of the senate crime investigating committee said he expects gamblers Frank Costello and Joe Adonis will go to jail for contempt in refusing to answer committee questions. Halley spoke at a bedside news conference at Roosevelt hospital where he had surgery last Monday. He plans to leave the hospital next week. He called Costello contempt perfectly clear and likewise Adonis who refused to answer more questions than Costello. He said the Department of Justice will be asked to prosecute.

Thunderjets clash with Red Jets over Yalu bridges

In Korea near the Yalu river two air arms fought intensely as 50 F-84s and 40 MiGs engaged at high altitude and down to tree tops. Two MiGs were damaged with no Allied losses while 86s protected bombers during a heavy strike on Sinuiju and Uiju bridges, dropping over 260 tons.

Confederate Vet Thomas Guinn Dies at 102 in Mississippi

Thomas Wiley Guinn, the last Confederate veteran in Mississippi, died at his home near New Augusta at age 102. His passing follows the January death of one of his two daughters, with Mamie Guinn and seven grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 14 great great grandchildren surviving.

Rescuers Near Entombed Miners In Spruce Mine
