Easter morning inspires reflection on life and renewal as spring arrives. The piece extols Monroe County West Virginia, its peaceful communities, low crime, and sturdy farms, and notes a women run reformatory near Alderson on Greenbrier river. It also recalls famous oratory by William Jennings Bryan and the value of prepared public speaking.
Washington reports April politics show Hoover with 164 Republican delegates and Lowden 100 while Curtiss 23 Norris 16 and 56 in doubt. Democrats place Smith at 186, Reed 36, George 28 with 38 in doubt. Analysts see both camps aiming to secure delegates and avoid upsets as conventions approach.
Hoover and Smith face broad opposition as rivals doubt they will win the grade. Analysts foresee demand for a compromise candidate or a chance for a dark horse to emerge.
Hoover backers report forty seven New York delegates claimed with others uncertain. Lowden gains in Wisconsin and eyes sixty plus Illinois returns, while Curtis boosters push him as compromise. Smith dominates Democratic field with 124 delegates and Michigan and Wisconsin wins. May 22 primaries loom.
Republicans focus on the Ohio and Indiana primaries and on Massachusetts New York and Pennsylvania as pivotal. Uninstructed delegates from these states may decide at Kansas City, with campaign plans shaped accordingly. California May 1 primaries counted as the line in competitive Democratic races.
One prelim to the Kansas City convention is settled with Senator Fess of Ohio chosen as keynote. He once backed drafting Coolidge and later backed Willie delegates in Ohio, now viewed as friendly to Hoover. Rumors point to Senator Moses of New Hampshire as permanent convention chairman with a later call for Claude G. Bower to keynote and Senator Robinson of Arkansas among potential chairmen.
Williamstown Ky April 7 Webster was found guilty of manslaughter for killing his wife Mrs Jennie Webster. He claimed she threatened him with a shotgun before he fired. The verdict fixes a maximum 21 year sentence. He said his wife and farm hand Robert Vermillion were too intimate and filed an appeal.
Twenty prospective brides of British soldiers, who arrived aboard the Cit of Paria, were all married within an hour after debarking. The brides, waving from the liner, used photographs to match with fiances found through advertisements. Some matches proved less handsome in person than in photos.
Charleston April 7 Gov Howard M Gore and H D Hatfield issued statements supporting the eighteenth amendment in response to a Wheeling inquiry. Gore urged strengthened enforcement and noted WV’s strong postion on prohibition while Hatfield backed nationwide prohibition as a moral reform and favored enforcement by officials who believe in the laws.
Former Congressman Benjamin L. Rosenbloom published letters to Governor Gore and former Governor Hatfield asking whether they support modification of the Volstead act. Rosenbloom campaigns May 20 primary on a platform favoring light wines and beer and calls for clear public stances from his opponents.
West Virginia Senator Goff announces his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination. He says he neither favors nor opposes any aspirant, notes months of urging, and claims to act for his state and the Republican delegation in Congress. He emphasizes he is not a stalking horse for any clique and seeks the nomination openly.
Two workers died and a third was seriously injured in back to back mining accidents at the Kingston Pocahontas Coal Company in Springton Mercer County. Miner Luther Tilley died after a motor collision in the mine and two loaders Alfonzo Stubblefield and Porter Jones were caught by a slate fall. Stubblefield died instantly while Jones suffered broken legs but survived. Tilley’s body prepared at Mercer Funeral Home and relatives headed to Bluefield.
Charleston April 7 Attaches of the U S supreme court began preparing the record for an appeal in the Mercer county damage case brought by J E B Kirk brakeman against the Virginian Railway He was awarded 30000 after being struck by a train while trying to reach an open derail switch The state supreme court had affirmed the verdict and a writ of certiorari will be sought to take the case to the U S supreme court
In Baldonnel on April 7 Colonels Fitzmaurice and German pilots von Huenefeld Koehl plan a non stop flight to America. Weather deteriorated raising doubts about takeoff and Lloyds Insurance for key backers delays coverage. An exclusive story fee of 150000 is sought by von Huenefeld amid rising offers from U.S. syndicates.
Gen Enoch Crowder announced he would stay in Denver at his sister's home to shield his grand niece Betty Martin Seibert from unnamed men who threatened kidnapping. Crowder left Chicago law practice as family illness drew him east and a guard had been withdrawn.
Major William D. Tipton, Maryland National Guard commander, piloted a monoplane at 110 mph from New York to Baltimore. He left the pilot seat to smoke and view the countryside, then returned to land at Logan Field after an hour and a half.
Chicago detectives rescued motor car dealer and hotel owner Thomas Gaynor after a week in captivity by a kidnap gang. Police traced the gang to a Crystal Lake two room cottage 40 miles northwest of Chicago, arresting seven abductors and recovering Gaynor unharmed though unshaven and exhausted. He described being kept in darkness most of the week and moved between hiding spots as the investigation continued. The case links to similar kidnappings in Detroit and Philadelphia.
Aaron M. Blattman a New York fingerprint expert filed in federal court for 56000 against Mrs Frances Stevens Hall and her brothers Willie and Henry Stevens over alleged forged fingerprints. He says he was to be paid 6000 for proof that prints on a calling card near Rev Hall’s body were forged and that he would have exclusive sale rights. He claims the defense refused to use his evidence and leaked it to newspapers before the Somerville trial opened.
A Texas family of eight perished in a blaze that turned their farm home into a funeral pyre. Boss Jackson and his wife died with six daughters. authorities investigated whether the fire was set after a possible murder. Sheriff Hart of Bastland County hinted at a throat-cutting act but withheld comment on a murder theory.
In Stonington Connecticut residents believed a movie scene unfolded as a fire engine roared through town driven by a man in pajamas. Uniformed officers pursued and halted the vehicle, with an asylum inmate from Norwich later cuffed by a state officer after stealing the hospital fire truck.

He accuses Imperial Wizard Hiram Evans of maladministering funds and alleges threats on his life linked to Evans associates. The case seeks a $100000 damages claim and a state receivership with funds accountability.
Norther Michigan streams surged over banks after heavy rains and thaws, flooding about a dozen Midland riverfront homes and disrupting traffic. The Tittabawassee River near Midland swelled into a torrent fourty miles downstream toward the Saginaw, cutting road links and endangering a power dam that may require dynamiting. A boat service was set up to reach outlying areas as Sanford near Midland also faced road isolation and farm damage.

Tazewell county authorities have fixed no date for William F. Martin 45 to face a preliminary hearing in the killing of Gus Hall 55 a Poor Valley farmer. The shooting 18 miles from Tazewell stemmed from a seventeen year old grudge over a fence line in front of Ike Martins home. N Clarence Smith common attorney for Fesewell has led the investigation since Martins arrest.
Texarkana Ark April 1 Preliminary hearings for Mrs Neecy Lynn 68 and her brother Robert Morris 61 charged with assault with intent to murder for allegedly poisoning a community well at a lumber camp near Fouke Ark were set for the county court here The case centers on arsenic found in the water after workers at Goldman and Hies sawmill drank from the well
