Minister Forde warns defenders not to grow overconfident after recent successes. Allied air forces strike large Japanese ships, scoring direct hits. Australian and American forces report strong supply levels of food and munitions.
United States and Australian forces conducted heavy raids at Rabaul and Gasmata in New Britain, scoring direct hits on ships and damaging airfields, amid fears Japan plans reinforcement. Prime Minister Forde urged vigilance, noting the tide could turn and warning against overconfidence.
Eight sailors died and about twenty were wounded when a large Panamanian cargo ship was torpedoed in the Caribbean on March 8. Survivors escaped in three life rafts and a lifeboat. the vessel later reached Mobile under her own power. Captain James Stewart and first mate Hawkins Pudske were among the dead.
Florida Senator Pepper proposes amendments to the $19.2 billion military appropriation bill to freeze all prices and wages for the war duration and outlaw union initiation fees in war industries. Fairmont held its parade while Bluefield Parkersburg and Wheeling marched downtown. Governor Neely Mayor Dawson and Nefflen led 25 000 along the line. Corrine Neely joined Red Cross units as flags decorated each city with limited programs in Huntington.
The Consumers' Research Division reports WV retail food prices rose 0.7 percent from February 3 to March 3, totaling a 4.35 percent increase since December 2. Increases varied by city. some declines occurred in Spencer Philippi and Fairmont, with Charleston unchanged. Major increases listed for Bluefield Buckhannon Clarksburg Elkins Kingwood Middlebourne Morgantown Moundsville New Martinsville Ripley Point Pleasant Romney St Marys Sutton Wheeling Welch Parkersburg.
