Giles County Extension Homemakers Plan Spring Meeting

The Giles County Extension Homemakers Clubs met in Pearisburg at the Municipal Building. Mrs. Jean Gentry opened with member introductions while Mrs. Katherine Jarvis read minutes and communications from Mrs. Macy McClaugherty and a memorial to Robert S. Sheffey. A Family Sources Conference was announced for July 22 to 24 in Blacksburg with a focus on food buying to fight inflation. Addie Hamilton displayed a Bicentennial quilt square for 1976 and clubs were asked to update their county history from 1958 for the scrapbook. Betty Donovan outlined new pin point requirements.

Giles County clubs plan yearlong activities and district meeting

Giles County social notes highlight plans for member of the year, a District V meeting at Bland on April 24 with casual dress and bag lunch, and an August county clubs family picnic. Church groups, extensions, and women’s clubs report meetings, speakers, devotions, awards, and district attendance.

Byrd backs mine safety program and funding call

U S Senator Robert C. Byrd urged full implementation of a surface mining safety program to reduce 35 to 50 annual deaths. He criticized budget officials for cutting funding and asked for a detailed funding and personnel plan to fully implement the program.

Red Cross Board Meeting Slated in Princeton

The Princeton Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a board meeting Monday at 7 30 p m in the third floor conference room of Princeton Community Hospital. Those unable to attend should contact Mrs Scott Lilly at 425 3103.

Bird Seeks Democratic Nomination for Virginia Senate Seat

Daniel W. Bird Jr., son of former State Senator D. Woodrow Bird, announces candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the 38th District covering Bland, Craig, Giles, Pulaski, Tazewell, Wythe. The Wytheville attorney and former Army Reserve captain pledges to address farmer returns, unemployment, highway funding, state revenue, and quality education.
