Sunday New York reports that after April 15 1986 IRA contributions will remain available but the deduction will vanish for many higher income workers covered by other pension plans. IRAs began in 1975 for nonparticipants and surged after 1981 widening access. From 1982 to 1986 First Boston says about 175 billion dollars flowed into IRAs.
Heavy snowfall forced the Blue Field Daily Telegraph to enforce an early deadline and go to press at 8 30 p m Saturday night.
Daylight saving time began at 2 a.m. in most areas causing clocks to be set back one hour. The change prompts residents to adjust schedules and devices to the new standard time. Government and media remind the public to update clocks and be mindful of any schedule shifts.

More than 12 inches of snow fell in the Bluefield region with additional four inch accumulations expected as a slow-moving spring snowstorm paralyzed parts of Virginia and caused up to 5,000 Appalachian Power Company customers to lose power at times. Trees and lines were hit by weighty snow and outages clustered around Welch Pineville and Grundy. Apco crews, some over 30 hours on the job, repaired lines with help from Pulaski, Virginia workers.

Capt. Douglas Katz, a Bluefield native and longtime car fixer, is slated to command the battleship New Jersey this August. The 58,000-ton ship, commissioned in 1943, has a storied record across World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and the Mideast. Katz, 44, directs professional development for Naval Academy midshipmen and sits on the admissions board selecting 1,300 incoming freshmen. He played high school football with star Roger Staubach and joined the Naval Academy in 1961.
Washington lawmakers and intelligence officials warn the new United States Embassy in Moscow may be contaminated with Soviet eavesdropping devices and call for scrapping the $190 million project. They cite a 1972 decision to prefab much of the building from Soviet components not subject to American inspection. Listening devices were allegedly placed in steel beams as part of the security lapse. The embassy issue follows the arrest of three Marine guards.
