Radiation levels at Three Mile Island eased to near normal as officials weigh cold shutdown options for the damaged reactor. NRC officials cited three human errors affecting the crisis while design and mechanical issues were noted as major contributors.
HEW Secretary Joseph Califano said long term health studies will monitor plant workers and Harrisburg area residents exposed to higher radiation after the Three Mile Island incident. In Charleston West Virginia a court appointed defense attorney for Sara Jane Moore argues in U S District Court that escape may be justified by duress or version claiming not every unauthorized leaving proves guilt. Princeton attorney Walter W. Burton was linked to a civil action for 77429.92 filed by International Coal Company in Raleigh County court. The suit alleged Burton withdrew over 234000 from company funds, repaying all but 77429.92, with trials pending as Burton died reportedly by gunshot Monday. Burton, also involved in civic roles, led the Mercer County Airport Authority and Princeton Community Hospital board.
