Commerce head missing in jetliner crash near Dubrovnik
An Air Force jetliner carrying Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and a delegation of U.S. business executives crashed into a clouded hill near Dubrovnik Croatia. Thirty three aboard were presumed dead. President Clinton mourned Brown as a magnificent life force and urged prayers for those aboard. The State Department will release names Thursday out of respect for families.

Suspicious fire destroys Welch department store remains
A 3 a.m. blaze razed the Collins Department Store in Welch and damaged four other buildings. Fire Chief Jim Ingole said the fire, suspicious in origin, spread across Wyoming and Elkhorn streets while crews fought flames until about 6 a.m. No injuries were reported and a state fire marshal will investigate. The Best Furniture Company suffered major water damage as the department store area burned.

Wythe man dies in tractor-trailer crash
A Wytheville man, 28 year old Michael Dwayne Smith, died at 3:40 a.m. when the car he rode in struck a southbound tractor-trailer on Interstate 77 near Bland exit. Cecile Dancy, the driver, survived and was airlifted in critical condition to Bristol Regional Medical Center in Tennessee. the truck driver was uninjured.
