Winter wreck leaves nine injured on Old Bluefield Princeton Road
A late Thursday winter storm caused a multiple vehicle crash on the Old Bluefield Princeton Road. Nine people from Bluefield and Princeton were injured and transported to Princeton Community Hospital. Rescue squads and fire department units responded, citing icy, slushy road conditions. A separate Bluewell area collision on U S Route 52 resulted in four treated and released at Bluefield Regional Medical Center.

Judge caps UMWA health fund benefits and sets new dues
U.S. District Court Judge Glen Williams ruled on the United Mine Workers of America health fund. He set contribution levels for Bituminous Coal Operators Association members at 3.07 per man hour into the 1950 Trust Fund and 0.60 per man hour into the 1974 Trust Fund. The decision, effective April 10, 1992, also requires trustees to pay benefits at Medicare rates and to suspend payments for beneficiaries over 65 not enrolled in Medicare until enrollment is verified.

Mower extradited charged in Princeton killing
Mercer County prosecutors charged Leroy Mower 48 of Princeton with first degree murder after his return from Virginia. He waived extradition, appeared before Magistrate Katherine Williams in Bluefield, and was ordered held without bond by Circuit Judge John R. Frazier. Investigators say the crime occurred March 9 and was likely robbery related. Mower allegedly lived at the victim Matt John Cernak Jr. Lilly Grove home when the shooting happened. Cernak, 65, was found dead March 13. Corporal L J McCarty noted the motive is believed to be robbery.

Bluefield Woman Drowns While Intoxicated
Bluefield police report Ellen J. Asbury aged 58 drowned in her bath tub while intoxicated. She was dead on arrival at a local hospital Tuesday night. State Medical Examiner Dr Irvin Sopher ruled the death as drowning while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of 0.23 percent.

Nine Injured in 15-Car Pileup on I-77 Wythe County
Snow and ice caused a chain reaction in the southbound lane of the New River Bridge on Interstate 77. About 11:45 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. the pileup involved 15 vehicles including tractor-trailers, injuring at least nine and sending several to Wytheville and Galax area hospitals. Traffic was diverted onto US 52 and Route 100.
