A massive quake and ensuing fire devastate Managua Nicaragua killing about 1 000 people and injuring thousands Americans among the dead. The American and British legations and Nicaraguan government buildings are destroyed with property losses near 30 million dollars. Martial law is declared as U S Marines and Red Cross mobilize to aid victims, communications collapse, and relief rushes in by land water and air.

Italian vendetta ties to double rural slayings in Mercer county

In Mercer county two Italian men died from gunshot wounds and a third was wounded after a dance at Joe Wada's home. Dominick Cornelgia died after being shot by Steve Museco who was provoked by Cornelgia per authorities. Mike Museco died at Bluefield sanitarium after being shot during the brawl. Steve Museco, bound over, faced the gunfire sequence along with Mike and Dominick. The two deaths marked the second fatalities from the Sunday afternoon shooting. Funeral arrangements had not been set.

Managua Sorrow After City Earthquake Wrecks Business Center

An early 20th century dispatch from Managua reports widespread destruction after a major earthquake. Buildings in the business center were leveled or damaged, fires broke out, water mains were severed, and a pall of smoke hung over the city as rescuers worked amid collapsed markets and debris. At least 160 inmates were reported dead in the National Penitentiary, with similar numbers injured.

In Montpelier Vermont on March 21 Warren R. Austin a 58 year old Republican won a special U S senate race by about two to one over Stephen M Driscoll Warren Austin captured 37 629 votes to Driscoll 15 331 in 247 of 248 towns and cities to fill the late Senator Frank L Greene seat The prohibition issue did not figure in the campaign.

In London on March 31 friends gathered for Arnold Bennett’s memorial service at St. Clement Danes. Bishop Russell Wakefield delivered glowing tributes calling the writer honest and modest, a quality the bishop said he would have liked to know better.

Bluefield College To Receive 25000 From Meador Estate

Bluefield College is to receive 25000 from the will of RG Meador late of Athens West Virginia and St Petersburg Florida. The will probate in Florida lists executors and trustees and directs sale of all property with proceeds used for entreaties and specific bequests. School bus tragedy buries five pupils and driver in snow

Holly Colorado March 31 five pupils and a driver who froze to death when a school bus stalled in large snow drifts near Towner were buried today. Governor Adams sent flowers dropped by airplanes over the funeral procession. The surviving children who endured two days and a night on the bus are recovering.

No trace had been found last night of the whereabouts of C P Williams shop foreman of the Barrow Motor company Bluefield avenue who disappeared from his home Monday night after a telephone call claiming to have lost automobile keys Two men were seen in Williams car on Bluefield avenue and later reports placed the vehicle at the Bland street intersection Patrolmen reported seeing the car again on Bluefield avenue with the door open and keys in the car Mrs Williams arrived at police headquarters with two men claiming her husband was not away from home and offered no reason for his disappearance.
