Frank Steffes Death as Hero Guarding Prisoners
Official report recalls Private Frank Steffes, son of Police Sergeant Ben Steffes, killed while guarding two military prisoners during a dumping operation near Hachita New Mexico on February 6 1918. He grappled with the assailant Fred Vogle who discharged a pistol wounding Steffes then shot him fatally. Vogle later killed himself near the Mexican border after a four hour chase. The incident drew praise for Steffes courage and duty from Capt W G Simmons Troop L 12th Cavalry and a letter to his father expresses deepest regret.

United Charities Board Reports January Aid Efforts
The United Charities Board in City Hall reports 64 families received help in January with eight new city cases. Four were given temporary work and five permanent employment. Donations provided clothing or food, and plans were discussed to improve living conditions for Mexicans in box cars and to increase reporting to the State Board of Health. The Advisory Committee will meet February 19 at the Public Library or City Hall depending on fuel.

Western avenue reopened by Blue Island Garage owners

Carl A Hogblom dies. longtime Blue Island resident
Carl A Hogblom of Blue Island died at his home 189 Cochran street on Tuesday February 12 after a year of illness from liver disease. Funeral services were held at his residence with Rev Carl Lund officiating and Harmonize Lodge No. 2 I C O F at the grave. Interment followed at Mt Greenwood cemetery. He was born in Sondernanland Sweden July 8 1863 and came to America in 1882 settling first at Porter Indiana then Blue Island in 1888. He married Minnie Olson August 4 1894 and is survived by his widow and four sons including Walfried a musician in the Second Regiment Illinois National Guards at Camp Logan Texas.

The remains of George Engelbrecht of LeRoy Iowa were brought here for burial. He was brother in law of the Nagel brothers of this city. Funeral services were from John Nagel's home on New Street Monday afternoon February 11 led by Rev M P Doermann. Interment in the Lutheran cemetery. Born May 1 1857 in Chicago he married Anna Nagel in 1892 and they lived in Iowa with one son.

Charles Marwitz, proprietor of the Loop saloon at Western avenue and Fulton street, died at St. Francis hospital early Friday after long stomach trouble. Funeral at Halinan's 331 Western avenue Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev J C Weeks officiating. Interment Mt Greenwood. Born in Blue Island in March 1867 he was nearly 51. Survived by four daughters.

Murder Weapon Found In Seitz Slaying Case
A revolver used to kill Frank Seitz on February 2 was found by a south side schoolboy in the yard of the old Whittier school near the alley of the crime. Kovacic had hidden the weapon in a snow bank during his flight and it emerged after a thaw. The gun was given to Chief Sorgenfrei. The five shells in the cylinder had all been fired.
