Telephone Franchise Sold for Bloomington Plant

Charles A. Ross buys the Bloomington telephone franchise from W. T. Hicks. Work must start immediately with 30 days to bring material and 60 days to complete a central exchange. The Norton Co. gears up for operations around January 1, 1895 with expected 75 boxes and about 35 to 40 miles of wire.

Consolidated Stone Companies Formed by Nortons in Bedford

The Enterprising Nortons Lenders and partners filed incorporation papers for the Consolidated Stone Companies in Bedford. The $1,000,000 company is the largest stock concern yet formed in the area, with Norton and Hunter quarries under option and valuable land near Smithville and in Lawrence county.

Election contest in commissioners court dismissed

The election contest filed Monday in the commissioners court was dismissed yesterday after the board ruled the charges insufficient. James F. Morgan sought to amend the complaint but was denied. The case may be appealed. bond set at five hundred dollars but not filed. Bast & Miller and Edwin Corr represented the plaintiff.

December Storm Forecast With Widespread Winter Weather

A monthly outlook predicts a storm on the 4th forming in the west and moving east, turning to sleet and snow across many areas from the 5th to the 7th. From the 10th to 12th expect reactionary storms and a polar wave bringing heavy sleet, followed by a warm spell on the 13th. Disturbances from the 11th to 16th bring high gales and a cold wave to the 20th. The worst period is the 22nd to 24th with near tempest winds, then a warm spell from the 25th to about the 29th brings heavy rains. in the north rain turns to snow and a great cold wave sweeps the continent.

Dora E. Strain a sixteen year old boy of Harrodsburg sues I. E. Wharton principal of Harrodsburg Schools alleging assault and battery. Through East and Miller the suit claims excessive punishment following a school rule violation. Wharton contends punishment matched the circumstances.

Bloomfield bank robber Charles Rivers sentenced to ten years

Charles Rivers, known as the Bloomfield bank robber, was tried on Tuesday, found guilty, and sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary after a failed escape attempt. Accomplices remain at large.

Beta Theta Pi Plans Lease for Mrs Cunning Residence

The Beta Theta Pi fraternity negotiates renting Mrs. Maude Cunning’s Sixth and Lincoln street home to serve as a chapter house. In-city members will occupy the upper floor while parlors serve as reception rooms. Mrs. Sue Bailey to act as matron and furnish board at 50 dollars per month. If the contract is made, Mrs. Cunning will rent rooms from Henry Axtell on North Washington Street for herself and daughter.

Stone Man Arrested at National Hotel

W. M. Mc Millen a Chicago stone broker was seized by Marshal George Owen on a capias ad respondendum from Horace Norton tied to a balance due Norton Stone Co. The case claimed by Norton and Mc Millen’s denial will be tried before Squire Robert Miller with Hon. John East for the plaintiff and Louden likely for the defense.

City Building Expansion and Removal of Sheds Planned

County commissioners are asked to donate twenty feet in the rear and twenty feet on the neat side of the city building to allow a southward enlargement. A ground door would store wood for the county, while the west addition would house the ladder wagon hose reels and upper floor offices. The plan aims to improve fire department space, provide city offices, and remove the unsightly sheds from court house park. The commissioners have shown willingness to grant the request and the improvement is likely soon.
