Assaulted and Robbed in Vincennes Yard Attack
Oscar Kindred was assaulted and robbed in the B and O railroad yards at Vincennes and returned home seriously injured. George Hicks, 31, was sentenced to Indiana State Prison for five to fourteen years after pleading guilty to robbery and fined one dollar plus costs. Hicks fled during transfer to jail but was recaptured. he admitted assaulting Kindred. Kindred’s draft registration card was found on Hicks. Kindred hopes to go to the army soon but may be unfit to travel.

Switz City Youth Narrowly Escapes Conscription Trouble
A Switz City youth drew sharp questions on origin and registration last Wednesday. After a phone conference, Weeden O. Jackson was told to detain him until sheriff and conscription officers arrived. The man produced a lost card certificate and paid his fare, promising to carry it in future.

Greene County Defense Council forms wartime organization
County Defense Council in Greene County held a full day meeting in Linton to map a complete war era organization. Ovid Fields elected treasurer, Ulysis Hall vice president, and Bland chair of the auditing committee. An executive committee and an organization committee were created with headquarters at Linton. The group plans fundraising and town ship campaigns and calls on all citizens to assist in defense and resource conservation. The next meeting is set for October 15 at 9 am in Bloomfield.

Sixty More Leave for Camp Taylor from Jasonville
At noon today sixty young men answered roll call and departed by train for Camp Taylor Louisville Ky. A patriotic procession including the Uniform Bank of Knights of Pythias and Wright township residents preceded the march to Monon depot with the Bloomfield band. The engine broke en route prompting a telegram for a replacement to arrive by 3 p.m. Autol trains will take the boys to Linton for the Southeastern railway to Camp Taylor.

William J. Wood of Evansville and a Indiana Public Service Commission member died of heart trouble in his Indianapolis apartment after about three weeks of illness. A Democratic commissioner, he was renowned for railroad transportation expertise and formerly served on the old state railroad commission and the U S Interstate Commerce Commission.
