Dr Jesse Hannah Dies by Hanging Near Linton Farm

Dr Jesse Hannah a Wright township native living two miles east of Linton hanged himself in his barn after breakfast. He had become mentally distressed over a real estate boom and had previously spent years in an asylum. He was found about 7 am.

Myers & Co Falls in Bloomfield Business Crisis

Myers & Co. of the New Wrinkle Grocery failed after five years of debt. Mr Myres borrowed 4000 from his Milwaukee brother, reduced principal, could not collect, and mortgaged goods to cover claims. Elmer Templeton now runs the store. Alexander and Litsinger attorneys handle the case with about 1000 in debt and 2000 in accounts. The community expresses sympathy. The King Pythias banquet was the town’s notable social event with a fish fry, trout from the lakes, and moving toasts and hospitality to nearly 120 guests. O. W. Shryer chaired, with toasts to Accolade lodge, Our Guests, The Candidate, and Our Goat, followed by home deliveries.

Woman and five children found in union depot penniless

Annie Murphy of Linton Indiana tells of fleeing her intoxicated husband James Murphy a miner who attacked her with a knife causing a minor wound. She packed her trunk with the children and boarded a train to Pittsburgh after a bad home incident. She was reportedly educated and well dressed, with the children neatly attired. The couple’s history includes the wife’s drunkenness and prior fines.

Eightieth Birthday of Uncle Billy Lawson Celebrated

relatives and friends gathered January 2 in Switz City to honor Uncle Billy Lawson's eightieth birthday. Lawson, born in New York, moved to Indiana via Ohio and Vigo County, has thirteen children with seven living, two sons famed in service, and his wife Aunt Margaret who also lost a son in service. He is the second oldest man in Grant township and embodies honesty and uprightness admired by all.

Jan 3 report states the Minnesota and Northwestern railroad tunnel in Rice township is finished and ready for iron, completing fifty-five miles of the road in Daviess and Stephenson Counties. The tunnel, 2460 feet long, 25 feet wide and 26 feet high, is the state's longest and among the nation’s. Boring began April 7 1887 through pulpy slate, and was tedious and costly.
