A mosaic of short notes covers J A Phillips’s Indianapolis business trip. Bloomfield hosts the Greene County teachers institute the week of August 27. The Red Cross and Navy League organize Bloomfield women to sew for soldiers. A library basement sewing room opens this afternoon to collect Pajamas night shirts socks wristlets sweaters scarves pillows wash rags from scrap materials. Volunteers will be shown the garments and methods to support troops fighting for the flag.
The Indiana League for Women's Service, branch of the State Council of Defense, distributes cards to register women ready to volunteer during emergencies. The card asks signers to indicate preferred service and available time, with another card for United States Food Administration membership pledging to follow food conservation directives. A committee has collected several signatures on both cards.

The state meeting of the Farmers' Educational and Co operative Union of America convened in the Baptist church, with National President Charles Barrett of Georgia as principal speaker. County State President James Nolting leads, state secretary Anna Lothrop attends, 72 locals (about 3000 members) represented, 250 in attendance yesterday.
Lyons youths Lotis Gastineau Paul Halstead and Elmer Fry have volunteered. Gastineau joined the aviation division last week in Indianapolis and has been sent to Fort Sam Houston Texas for training.
Miss Lillie Coley visited Dana friends while Mel Heaton traveled to Johnson County. Mrs. J. M. Strauser spent weekend in Bloomfield. Cleo Bratnam visited Lora Foster who has been ill. Lonnie Hollars joins relatives in Switz City. Visits to Al Bradford’s, Terre Haute, and Bloomfield frequent. weddings, travel, and family events noted. Mr. Harden dies after sleep. funeral and family details recorded.
The Heaton reunion gathered at Worthington on Sunday. Robert Denman visited the community last week. Families from Utah and nearby towns spent Sunday with relatives. The Sharkey church plans a missionary convention on the third Sunday in September. Guy Bender fell ill at Sharkey church and was taken home. Several local residents visited Taylor Pirtle’s family on Sunday. John W. Harden, longtime blacksmith, died Sunday afternoon around 1:00.
Miss Inez Smith of Park visited Mary Hasler Saturday night. Tillie Payne and Alf Mullis hosted Tom Mullis’ Sunday visit. Sunday-school picnic at Mineral drew many locals. Carrie Feutz hosted by Miss Cuddle Feutz of Bloomfield Monday. Ben Mullis visited Ode Myer in Plummer Friday. Ulysses Payne and Mrs Payne stayed with her relatives Alf Mullis for several days. Lex Deckard and children from Lyons and John Humphreys from Switz City joined for dinner at Charles Hasler’s Monday.
Jasper Riddle seeks rheumatism treatment in Linton. Belle Coppin and Mary Ockerman joined a Mineral picnic. J D Pershings of Elnora visited Ben Craven. Grace and Fern Combs stayed with Ruth Bynum. August 25 church basket meeting urged. Thomas Cravens, son of Bun Cravens, ill with typhoid. Malissa Pafford, lately at Bedford, visiting home. Grace Carmichael and children of Indianapolis visiting Quillens. Leslie Dessie Malissa Pafford hosted birthday party for Shirley. locals gathered at church to rehearse songs for the basket meeting with more practice Sunday night.
Sharpey Little Evelyn Shipman is ill with summer complaint. Miss Hester Hash spent Monday with cousin Ruby Van Slyke of Coen. John Hardin, respected farmer and blacksmith, died of paralysis of the heart Sunday at one o clock. Funeral services were held.
Mrs. C. C. Hendren remains ill after a visit from Dr. T. Roy Cook of Bloomfield. Bent Heaton and Illinois relatives attend John Hardin’s funeral along with Mrs. Sig Rogers and her daughter Gladys. Frank Shipman and daughter Evelyn visit the Shipman family in town.
George Foster spent Saturday night with home folks. Evelyn Feutz stayed Sunday night in Bloomfield with her uncle Dan Feutz. Jewie Frye of Bloomfield visited Inez Jackson. Agnes and Inez Foster of Bloomfield spent the weekend here visiting friends. Violet Hinds of Newberry visited Winifred McGinnish from Friday to Sunday. Wayne Shertzer and Guy Warnick of Bloomfield called on lady friends Sunday. Mr and Mrs Harmon Sholders and children spent Sunday with Ernest Cattron nearby Simpson Chapel.
Newberry Edna Woods left for Xenia Ohio for vacation. Edith Scott travels to Aurora Illinois for an extended visit with a classmate. Cleveland Lester and wife from Indianapolis visited his parents. Mrs J W McNeely went to Evansville for a short visit and shopping. Rev Sims and daughter from Shoals visited Clar ence Quackenbush. WV Bynum and wife of near Bloomfield visited J D Moore's family. Clarence Quackenbush shipped household goods to Terre Haute for Chicago and Southeastern railroad work. Train service limits travel to Elnora or Bloomfield with no same day return. F R Sappenfield and W A Hilburn visited Patoka to see Reason Hilburn's family and brought cantaloupes. John Musselman returned from Akron Ohio where employed by Goodyear Rubber Co. Mrs Brittick of Indianapolis visited Amos Musselman. Oscar Dye of Indianapolis came with S A Slinkard and wife. Dye to begin training at Fort Benjamin Harrison in the Second Indiana Officers Training Corps.
Ilene Ralph Riggil works at Frank Morgan's flour mill in Plainsville. Lex Deckard from Lyons tended farm interests here last week. Mrs. Maggie Anderson and Mrs. Frank Anderson with children visited near Newberry Sunday and Maggie stays with her son Frank here now. Ermel Laughlin spent last week with her aunt at Elnora. Freedia Mullis returned home to attend school after the summer with her uncle. Mr. and Mrs. Blumer Hasler F K Chaney and family attended church at West Island Sunday. Lucenda Beem visited her brother Mart Burdsell and family at Elmora late last week. Irene Canady spent weekend with Lidia and Edith Brown of West Island. Clara White returned to Elnora to be with her brother for a farewell visit before going to France. V J Mullis and Blumer Hasler learned threshing cooking from Mrs.

Two licenses issued this week by the circuit clerk. They went to Earl Emmerson, a miner, and Pearl D. Miller, both of Dugger, and to Eskel Beasley, a miner, and Edith J. Kambill, both of Linton.
Oscar E. Ackerson of Monticello was named county agricultural agent to succeed C F McIntosh who resigned to become State Supervisor of County Agents at Purdue University. McIntosh will transfer to Purdue immediately and Ackerson will begin duties here.
Walter T. Brown of Bloomfield assumed duties as superintendent of the county schools yesterday. A trustees meeting noted the retiring superintendent Lieutenant D. C.
