Freyberg guests hosted by Road Board circle at Nelson House

About 40 representatives of the Road Board and district groups with their spouses met Sir Bernard and Lady Freyberg at Nelson House around 10 15 on Saturday. The visit was brief as he departed for Manjimup at about 11 o'clock.

Goats Track Widening Planned by Bridgetown Road Board

At a Bridgetown meeting Mr. C Moyes urged widening the so called Goat Track describing it as a woeful path used by eight houses and hospital staff. Members backed the plan, with Moyes moving to repair it within two months. H C Moore seconded and the motion passed.

Bridgetown Road Board approves Laverty Street plan for 18 ft road and 24 ft bridge

At a Friday meeting the Bridgetown Road Board voted to build an 18 feet wide Laverty Street to the bridge with land levelled to 66 feet for parking. A 24 feet bridge will be constructed while a chain wide bridge is rejected and a footpath will be added for pedestrians.

Public apathy toward safeguarding property sparks brigade talk

The meeting discusses forming a Central Fire Brigade under the Bush Fires Act. Plans call for a newspaper notice inviting residents to a public meeting, to recruit new members and recover equipment from former brigade volunteers. The date set is Monday, December 20.

Outsize Snake Encounter Near Wilganup Bridge

Bill Wheatley faced an unusual incident when a large brown snake blocked a road near Wilganup. He pinned the reptile with a rear wheel, the snake bit the tyre, and Wheatley killed it with an axe. The creature measured 8 feet 6 inches, likely a regional record.

Town Hall Renovations Awarded for Bridgetown Work

Tender submitted by Messrs Harmer and Rouse for Bridgetown Town Hall renovations has been accepted by the Road Board. Work will commence over Christmas week while offices are closed and the remainder of the hall will be attended to in March next year.

Bridgetown Trotting Meeting Cancelled Sparks Concern

The Bridgetown meeting was cancelled with 19 horses nominated versus 20 in November. South West Trotting Council discussed the action at Donnybrook, noting secretary H Long’s resignation and appointing M Briggs. Delegates urged the Trotting Association to define a sufficient horse count.

Bridge Town Road Board Fixes Road Patrol Hire Rate

At a Friday meeting Mr L Evans questioned the private hire rate for the Road Patrol. The secretary noted the hourly rate had risen from 11/8d to 30d and then to £1, with board members arguing for a cost favorable to ratepayers.
