Second Day of International Temperance Convention Opens
At Chicago Oct 14 the second day of the World’s Congress of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union opened at 6 o’clock with Lady Henry Somerset presiding and prayers by Mrs M M Love Australia. The hymn Nearer My God to Thee united the audience as several congresses paused to listen. Bible reading by Mrs H W Smith England followed, then Miss Agnes Weston England reviewed sailors’ temperance progress. A mass memoriam for Mary Allen Weet was held with tribute from Japan’s delegate Chika Sakurai.

Treasury bureau figures show September imports at 40,450,800 with domestic exports 70,015,004 and foreign 1,053,344 totaling 71,964,008. Nine months ending September 30 1893 report imports 25,393,24 and domestic exports 597,041,40 with foreign 16,122,721 total $?164,183. The nine month excess of imports over exports stands at 22,221,440. In September 1893 imports were 47,105,263 less than 1802 while domestic exports exceeded by 7,954,256.
