General Joseph Wheeler testifies on Santiago and Wikoff during the war inquiry. He notes some trench suffering but praise for General Shafter’s efforts and claims Wikoff camp was a model of supply, with ample hospital capacity and rapid response to demand.
A late bulletin from Adjutant General Corbin states 3,010 total army deaths to date, with 2,565 due to disease. New York Oct 6 The state Republican committee notified Roosevelt at Oyster Bay of his nomination for governor. Dr Depew praised the party unity. Roosevelt argued national issues dominate this year and urged money stability protection for American industry a stronger navy and army and guardianship of our colonial interests including Porto Rico and the East and West Indies.
In Newport News Virginia on October 6 a huge crowd of about 40 000 gathered as the first class battleship launched amid steam whistles and the Star Spangled Banner. Miss Nannie Leiter of Chicago sponsored the vessel with Governor Tanner of Illinois present. a grand banquet for 600 followed the ceremonial launch.
In Kentucky the Democratic organization appears to have lost its identity as a party. Senator Lindsay and almost all leaders and many rank and file registered as Democrats without factional distinctions. Reports indicate light registration versus 1803 and last year while the Goebel election law yields no complaint from either side.
A dispatch from London reports Thirty Cossacks and thirty English marines arrived in the area during the day. In Milwaukee, Joseph G. Donnelly won the Fourth District Democratic congressional nomination, defeating George W. Pack. Separate notes mention a procurator general sending a report to the court regarding a revision of a Dreyus case.
General Merritt outlined to American peace commissioners his views on the Philippines physical geographical moral and political conditions. The Spanish commissioners were welcomed by President Faure at four o'clock and the American group followed. Cable greetings from President McKinley were conveyed and Faure pledged to transmit his reply directly to McKinley.
Oct 6 report claims Aguinaldo’s insurgent government was refused recognition by the president. Aguinaldo and Lopez met with Assistant Secretary Adee at the State Department, amid awaiting instructions from Malolos sent after three cables. Lopez offered no statement about insurgent standing before the Paris peace commission.
John Stanley mayor of Skaguay Alaska visits San Francisco as the Pacific and Arctic railroad builds from Skaguay to Selkirk. The line reaches White Pass with freight over 85 tons daily and payroll last month near 199000 dollars. Workers from Limited men labor on the spur and a transfer of loads from White Pass covers a distance of about eighty miles.
Colonel Bryan’s request to discharge a number of men from the Third Nebraska infantry who wish to return home was approved by the Secretary of War in about 15 cases. The decisions had the support of company and regimental officers as well as brigade and corps commanders. Base reasons varied among the individuals.
Reports from Branawick and surrounding areas describe Camp Teland near Darien on the Altamont river swept away. Only three escaped the island while 20 to 60 may have perished among a population of colored truck growers. Brunswick sees four deaths and about 500000 in property damage. News from outlying areas is limited due to outages.
Mapisor Wisconsin reports that Chippewa Falls Quonto and Marshfield mayors say contributions are arriving to aid fire sufferers. Three carloads of lumber will be sent from Oconto with Chippewa Lumber and Boom company adding a carload of lumber and supplies. Milwaukee sent a carload of clothing and provisions.
A Bombay special reports a ferryboat capsized crossing the Indus at Mite tan Kote in the Punjanb region. About 100 passengers were drowned. Also noted is the apparent suicide of Columbia University chemist Henry E McDermott in New Haven after being found unconscious.
Wakes Minn October 6. Reports claimed Marshal O Connor was captive and Indians would resist, but no fighting occurred. O Connor met with Bear Island chiefs and pledged surrender of Chief Bush Bar and others. General Bacon Major Wilkinson Lieutenant Ross and 80 Fort Snelling troops arrived. snow storm.
Mars soldiers from Gnelling move toward the Indian uprising site at Leech Lake region in Minnesota with Corporal Grimes of Company B in command. A separate report from Rockport, Missouri notes three men buried in a sand bank while digging. Lloyd and Joseph Henderson and Frank Dorat died earlier.
Irving M. Bootr, president of Union Tron works, rejects reports of a gigantic warship buildin g combine. He says Union Tron has had no approach on the subject and deems the proposition absurd. Berlin correspondent notes rumors of a German iron trade cartel aiming to curb American competition.
A joint session of American and Spanish evacuation commissioners in Havana lasted two hours with heavy guard outside. The Spanish side said immediate island evacuation was impossible while the American side urged immediate action. No agreement reached as General Solano left Havana for Cienfuegos to relay orders. Spanish troops at Manzanillo reportedly prepare to depart by two transports to Cienfuegos.
In San Juan Porto Rico on October 6 transports P De Latrusie and Isla de Panay sailed or prepared to sail with troops. P De Latrusie has lived locally and Isla de Panay carries about 1200 soldiers bound for Spain. Rumor says Captain General Macias may depart on the Aliade from Havana. American troops advance as Spaniards concentrate at the port. Free transport home for families of officers has spurred many marriages among departing officers and officials.
From Santiago de Cuba a dispatch reports General Calixto Garcia has accepted a role with the American administration. He will receive 500 dollars monthly plus expenses and serve as commissioner handling negotiations with Cuban forces to disband. He departs soon for a three to four week mission. Naval Constructor Hobson moves guns from the Vizcaya to Guantanamo as he plans to salvage the vessel.
The schooner Samir E Palmer with Captain Whittier aboard was lost Sunday near Btone Inlet seven miles south of Charleston. Drowned are Captain Whittier, First Mate Brig, and crew including Marc McDonald, Healy, Feberste, Walter Stanaliffe, Jos Meyers, Tames Ros, and other colored seamen. Separately, the Congregational Church America board held its annual convention in Park Church with General Byron M Outcheon delivering the welcome and about 200 delegates present from missions in China, Turkey, South Africa and the Pacific.
