New York reports joint committee discussions on baseball rules for 1889. Delegates debated high and low pitch, home plate strikes, and the pitcher’s distance with votes against a major change. Evening session allowed clubs to use a tenth player as a substitute during games.
Reports from Washington say President may appoint Colonel Lamont as judge advocate general to replace General Swain. Lamont denied prior knowledge, then acknowledged the report, amid a lively contest among officers seeking staff positions.
Ottawa reports confirm Lord Sackville and Mrs West abandoned plans to travel there. A dispatch states they will sail from New York for France at an early date. The note also mentions Parliament convening on Monday and a ship named Wanderer in transit with ministerial actions in the background.
Powderly appears set to win another term as master workman as the assembly votes on law changes and power expansions. T. B. Barry denounces Powderly, accuses misuse of funds and staffing, and vows to form a new order named the Brotherhood of United Labor after adjournment.
A stormy Knights of Labor meeting revealed strong opposition to Powderly. Delegate Crowell demanded charter actions against East Saginaw Assembly No. 79 amid denials of district dissolutions. The afternoon session appointed a five member committee to Philadelphia to probe charges while debate over amalgamation vs cooperation intensified and Barry prepared stump speeches in support of a new order.
The letters to President-elect Harrison include forty parents naming babies Benjamin Harrison since the election, with two sets of boy triplets among them. A Philadelphia circular hints at cabinet names, while Harrison weighs his approach as Morton plans a trip and Elliott proposes widening railroad rate powers.
A fake Evening Des patch edition circulated with a lurid account of a mine explosion near Mahoney Pennsylvania killing thirty miners. In St Paul a separate wire service copy appeared in a rival paper's 9 PM edition as a special Muay Teprovements item. The New York baseball convention opened at Fifth Avenue hotel with plans for Cleveland to replace Detroit and a championship pennant awarded to the New Yorks. Northwestern lines proposed a first class rate of 60 cents from sea board to St Paul, plus 10 more for through traffic. Dakota millmen formed an association to standardize their industry. James Russell Lowell was banqueted by the Philomathic Society, en route to New York. Three feet of snow fell at Sault Ste Marie, with temperatures around five degrees.
