Partial returns from yesterday's elections indicate Democratic gains in New York, Virginia, and Massachusetts, with a close race in Ohio. New York results favor Rice and Gilbert, while Long Island and Brooklyn show Democratic leads. the Legislature trend suggests a Republican majority may not yet be assured. Virginia reports large Democratic margins in several counties, with Mahone’s vote largely overtaken.
Unusually large statewide vote as Essex and southern counties report. Abbott, Democratic candidate for governor, appears headed for victory. Early returns show Democratic gains in Ohio and Boston area with Campbell leading in Cincinnati and Foraker trailing, while statewide counts in New Jersey favor Democrats.
Nebraska voted today for minor state and county offices and a congressman to fill the Second district vacancy caused by James Laird's death. The day was fair but interest was light, returns coming in slowly and an estimated Republican majority of 18,000 to 20,000 expected.
Kansas counties report county officer contests limited to local issues with some races centering on resubmitting the Poor amendment. In cities the issue gains weight as Democrats push for reform while Republicans sometimes back it.
In Lesaxon Pennsylvania four men died when molten iron erupted from furnace No 10 at Cale Brook this afternoon. Victims named include Harvey Bahr Henry Fertig Will a Harvey Beck and others severely burned.
Unofficial Ohio returns show Campbell with a lead of about 8,005 as eight counties finish and four more lean Democratic. Cleveland area votes favor Republicans though the city backs the overall ticket, while Democrats claim potential majorities in the state house and possible U.S. Senate changes. In Iowa, Boies appears set to win the governorship by a sizable margin and the Democratic ticket gains strength in several counties, with statewide outcomes hinging on remaining returns.
Secretary Halford downplays the election surge citing history and sentiment shifts in New York and Chicago. In Patensine, General Mahone faces arrest on charges of shooting Harrison after a victory celebration, with bail set at 2500 and Mahone released after brief detention.
Governor Mellette and state officials reached Pierre with plans to organize immediately. Temporary offices to be set in the courthouse, awaiting completion of a new capital building in December. Rumors of a special session are denied as the administration prepares for early operation.
