Walter Quinton Gresham Biography of a Distinguished Soldier
Walter Quinton Gresham rose to major general of volunteers in the Civil War and later served as United States circuit judge for Indiana. He held three cabinet posts including postmaster general and secretary of the treasury under Arthur and a secretary of state under Cleveland. Born 1842 in Harrison county Indiana from English stock, his father was killed while serving as sheriff. Gresham studied at Corydon seminary and Bloomington, practiced law, and joined the Republican Party. He commanded troops in the Tennessee and Atlanta campaigns, sustaining a leg wound at Leggett Hill. After the war he resumed law, ran unsuccessfully for Congress, then was appointed district judge, later cabinet posts, and finally secretary of state in 1900 amid complex diplomatic duties.
