Madrid reports warn internal unrest matches external upheaval with Monday’s demonstration. Crowds jeered Queen Regent and called for Don Carlos or a republic while ministers debated resignation at Sagasta’s residence. Aguilera vows to resign amid police clashes as mood shifts toward stability or military rule.
A Madrid dispatch says a cabinet crisis is imminent and a major government reshuffle likely, with possible formation of a national ministry under Marshal Martines Campos. General Weyler's prowar stance boosts his popularity but his leadership seems unlikely.
Duluth citizens launch a drive to raise money for munitions of war for Gomez army. The city government led by the mayor, board of trade, organized labor, jobbers and churches, with Bishop McGorrick, will collect contributions. Arms bought will be sent to the Cubans via the war department and a city proclamation will call for citizen donations.
Mount Gretna Pennsylvania May 6 Battery A under Captain Barclay H Warburton has been ordered by the war department to prepare to leave within 48 hours. The unit will be recruited to full fighting strength at once. Additional naval reserves depart Michigan for Norfolk as navy expands service. Postal service to Cuban ports ordered with Even Brewer named as organizer. Print paper prices rise half a cent with mills operating day and night to meet demand.
Weyler’s brother in law, Jone Vicente de Cortija of the Third Spanish cavalry, allegedly among ten officers captured with the Argonauta. The steamer’s capture was telegraphed and confirmed by U S forces at Key West. Colon de Cortija disputes the relation but sources support the tie.
No official report from the fleet in the Philippines as cables fail and ships arrive at Hong Kong. Calfornia state volunteers likely to form the quota if Dewey needs to hold captured islands until a final settlement with Spain. troops may be sent to Manila from San Francisco.
Washington May 6 The cabinet decided to await Commodore Dewey s report before sending troops deemed necessary to enforce control of the Philippines. A strong military force is to be sent soon with Pacific slope troops. at least 5,000 are expected within ten days. The administration aims to hold the islands pending an settlement with Spain.
San Francisco May 8 George H Grippings U S N pay inspector reports navy orders to charter Australis steamer to carry coal and sap to Commodore Dewey at Manila. Australis is ready and in good order 4600 ton capacity capable of 15 knots anchors at Spreckels Bros for immediate charter.
The torpedo boat Ericsson reports being fired on by soldiers near Havorn about three miles west of Havana while recon motoring. The gun boat Wilmington answered with several shots. Also, the First National Bank of Carthage closed its doors with its president having absconded amid an ongoing investigation.
London May 6. A space dispatch says Premier Sagasta will tell the cortes the queen regent that Spain will pursue the war to the bitter end. Madrid officials say Spain will throw its naval strength into a single effort to crush the American squadron in Cuban waters. No intervention proposals will be listened to until an engagement is fought. Luxv oy May 6. Madrid dispatch via Bayonne reports officers stirring mobs to attack ministers homes and cheer Weyler. Soldiers at barracks prevented from joining the mob by officers’ pleas.

China issued a neutrality proclamation restricting warship access on the Asiatic coast. The decree follows American base acquisition in the Philippine Islands and marks China's first such action, praised by naval officers for withholding the decree until informed of the base.

Cape Racs teleoperators on the south coast report hearing heavy firing lasting about 15 minutes on Saturday night. They believe two ships engaged in a sea battle off the New founded coast near St James Newfoundland.
