In Watertown on May 2, Independents caucus at Music Hall, backing Cleveland and Day while Church backers press for party unity in a split led by Bangs and Engle. Two conventions meet, roasts fly, and lines form as Day and Church vie for control, with factions claiming governor Chia and patronage.
The Nebraska Democratic State Convention met at 2 p.m. and RA. Battery was elected permanent chairman. He endorsed free trade and Nebraska pledged a solid Cleveland delegation. Delegates named include James Bord James Sterling Morton James E. North and Tobias Castor.
In Washington May 8 the Senate debated the railroad land grant bill with Hoar and Palmer amendments. West rails at Chicago packers, Plumb targets beer and pork trusts, citing falling cattle prices and rising consumer meat costs. House tariff debate ends amid heated exchanges as Wilson of West Virginia urges unity and progress remarks. Executive session adjourns the Senate until Monday. The president approves an act for internal revenue collection.
Reports from Winona and Indianapolis describe the Mississippi river rising to near fifteen feet above low water, flooding towns and forcing mills and the Tremont house to close. Residents of Ponduly addition reach homes by boat and sleep in hammocks as rubber-booted workers man the Herald pressroom amid rising waters.
A church convention in May 3 at Wahpeton debates a resolution to read Judge Bangs out of the party and elect a new territorial committee chairman. It is withdrawn after appeals by local leaders. Rumors allege Bangs was paid 2800 dollars for expenses to St Louis, but lack confirmation. A five-member charges committee will request information with affidavits to support charges against Governor Church.
May reports from St Paul, Jamestown and Chicago outline political defections, reelected officials, and a rash of crimes. Notable items include Blodgett’s defeat for delegate, Gov Green and ex-Governor Alcott elected, and a jail sentence for Allen Meyers. A burglar linked to the Blinky Morgan federation is seized in Dernair.
