A $50,000 damage suit faces Schweinfurth and two associates over alleged unlawful influence in Rockford.
In St Paul on March 8 1900 United States disbursing agent Mr Elrod began paying claims of surviving Sioux scouts and descendants from the early sixties Indian war. 188 original agents and soldiers named, two thirds deceased so lands to descendants. A large mob of about seventy five armed citizens attacked the Memphis jail at nine in the morning and hanged Tous Moss Will Stuart and Cal McDowell after forcing the jailer to open the cells. More than ten seconds of rifle fire followed. the three men died quickly. The riot sparked a citywide frenzy with thousands of black residents gathering and a 100-man posse patrolling the area. Leading black leaders urged calm, warning of further danger.
