After a flood that forced hundreds to seek refuge on Prospect Hill, pneumonia cases multiply among evacuees. Sanitary flags mark locations of bodies amid advancing darkness.

Labor and industry are halted, with Cambria iron works and other plants unable to resume. Even days after the disaster, many still fear breakfast tomorrow. Public sympathy pours in yet tangible support lags as donations strain to meet urgent needs.
Governor Mellette issues a proclamation urging Dakota citizens to donate to Pennsylvania flood victims. He recalls the 1881 Missouri flood and directs contributions to J. M. Bailey Jr., territorial treasurer at Sioux Falls, for forwarding to Pennsylvania's governor.
Rosébud Agency June 5. General Crook meets with the Indians who request time to discuss the treaty as they cannot read written words. Red Cloud arrives. while influential, his stance on the bill is uncertain. The commission notes they must be fed as long as they stay, delaying action and risking many departing to distant farms if rations end.
