The station agent at Nowata, Oklahoma was held up by a lone highwayman believed to be Cherokee Bill. At 8:49 p.m. the robber fled with two express packages and 84 dollars and sixty cents in railroad money.
Adry Hayward’s status before the law remains unclear though he is not treated as a criminal. He travels with guard, enjoys Sunday meals at home, returns to St. Paul jail, and vents in his cell while conversing with visitors. He spends much time with lawyers as authorities assess his case.

The grand jury finished its inquiry into States Attorney Kern’s office. One juror favored immediate indictment, but the panel delayed decision until Wednesday. No anticipated criticism of the office is seen. E J Baldwin in Santa Anita signs orange deal with Los Angeles firm for about 180 car loads. Estimated value around 40000, likely largest single-owner orange sale.
A team of horses owned by Anson B. Palmer was killed when a falling tree struck their camp at C. B. Beckman’s camp in Roars Minnesota. A fire in Kuin North Dakota destroyed the Mix hotel Lang’s general store and two other buildings, one of which started the blaze.
William L. Strong becomes mayor, ending 23 years of party shifts, with reform aims similar to 1873 efforts. The Lexow committee and anti corruption movement spurred talks of stronger mayoral powers, including removal authority over police and department heads, and broader city government reform.
Jun 1 Florida reports a 14 degree low at the signal station near sunup, the coldest since 186 and just one degree above the 1886 freeze. Titusville Gainesville Pahka and Sanford show about 18 above zero. Officials fear major orange crop damage with 2.5 million crates frozen and 2.6 million remaining, promising high prices.
The North Carolina legislature will meet this week to elect two United States senators. Senator Ran som's term ends next March and his successor will be chosen, while the term of the other expires March 1, 1897. Marion Butler, leading Populist and president of the National Farmers' Alliance, is likely to be selected. Peter Pritchard, Republican leader, is expected to join him to fill the term of Vance. The political scene shows young newcomers and a shift from veteran power, with Republicans and Populists poised in the new balance.
