Army headquarters rumor says between now and Jan 15,000 soldiers will be concentrated in San Francisco to embark for the Philippines. Units include the Third Fourth Fifth Seventh Thirteenth and Twentieth infantry with volunteers possibly returned to the United States for muster out.
Reports from Boston date December 1 describe Buturay’s storm causing numerous wrecks along the New England coast. Cape Cod bars have claimed many lives aboard the Portland and Portia, with fifty-one passengers and forty-eight crew aboard Portia. Telegraph lines down, locals endure cold and hunger as wreckage lines miles of shore and Provincetown reports nearly eighty wrecks with unknown fatalities.
A North Truro report confirms the Portland steamer of the Boston and Portland Steamship Co. was wrecked off Highland Light at 10 am Sunday. The entire 51 passengers and 48 crew died or are missing as wreckage washes ashore. 34 bodies recovered by High Head lifesaving crew by nightfall, including the body of a woman. News came via special train since Cape Cod communications were cut by storm.
Dec 1 Provincetown Mass reports twenty seven vessels driven ashore in the vicinity. Most crews saved though several lives lost. Wrecks include cossters and fishermen. Storm destroys shipping, floods streets, drifts wharves. Four firehouses and a Beach Point lobster hatchery wrecked.
Boston reports life savers near the cape believe a large steamer named Gate City struck and sank. A hunting party sighted bodies washed ashore at Nau Set, with lifesavers claiming to have seen a man bearing the ship’s name in the surf.
A bomb with 140 grammes of powder and nails was found in the bourse at Marseilles. The fuse had been lit but did not burn, and no injuries were reported. Police and investigators examined the device and searched the area for further threats.
Visitors at the White House include Joseph Choate of New York who is in Washington on Supreme Court business. Four armed men seized a Missouri Pacific passenger train about four miles west of Sedalia at 12:55 a.m. The engineer Jim West, employed by the company, was captured after a volley of about 20 shots. The accomplices split up with one wounded and another reported captured. a posse pursued the remaining two robbers toward Georgetown. Superintendent Hopkins learned of the plan beforehand and the affair occurred after the Kansas City departure at 5:35 p.m. Officials aboard included secret service men and a freight mob.
In New York on December 1 Corbett said he would fight Sharkey again for nothing if training expenses are covered. Sharkey’s manager Tom O Rourke issued a card stating Corbett will fight for nothing with expenses, receipts to go to the poor as a Christmas gift, and a committee to distribute the money. A time must be named within two weeks.
In a 25 round bout at the Lenox Athletic club New York’s George Dixon the colored featherweight champion defeated Oscar Gardner the Omaha Kid with a decision by referee Dick Roche. The verdict displeased many spectators who saw Dixon largely dominate while Gardner countered forcefully whenever they clinched.
In Chicago an annual ward Republican meeting sparked a fatal clash between factions led by Coroner Berz and ex-councilman John Rogers. Gunfire injured several, including William Mahoney, with rival accounts of who invited the confrontation and how the melee began.
Creditors of Grant C. Gillett say the absconding cattle plunderer did not leave penniless. They estimate he owed about 1.5 million dollars and may have carried away hundreds of thousands, with investigators unable to locate investments or expenditures for over half the sum.
Rumor in Macon Georgia claims negro soldiers of the Third North Carolina regiment here plan to destroy the city after the shooting of Private Will Kempin of Company, prompting widespread unease among civilians and troops.
