Big fight at Oliver Springs as miners attack stockade

Miners assault Oliver Springs stockade with nearly 700 attacking guards facing about forty. Fire drives back the assailants. three guards killed, several wounded. A brief truce allows removal of wounded, while miners threaten later assault. A special train of twenty three guards arrives to relieve the besieged. Telegraph wires fail. trains halted to keep militia out. Citizens denounce governor’s slow response.

Open switch causes deadly Ohio rail accident

Cosmocrox Ohio August 17. A switch error on the Toledo Walnut Valley line, a Pennsylvania system branch, crushed six men to death and left fifteen injured near Richeson gravel pit. Conductor Humphrey and Engineer Clyde hauled gravel while men atop cars were crushed as a long train collided with idle cars in the pit. Rescue teams spent hours recovering bodies and tending the wounded.

Perilous voyage of Columbian steamer on St Lawrence

Nearly 800 passengers aboard the Columbian, a 245000 dollar Ontario steamer, faced a perilous ride as the tiller rope broke near Cedar Rapids. Strangled His Mother at Carlsbad Villa

In Carlsbad Baden Aug 17 Mrs Alice Crocker of Chicago was strangled by her 24 year old son in her villa. Needing medical care, the son now in asylum confessed but is declared hopelessly insane. The two had traveled Europe together and he often accompanied her during waterside visits. The article also notes a separate incident where four steers escaped a slaughterhouse on Forty Ath Street roaming the streets. one leaped into the North River, another was killed after injuring a man, and the remaining steer was shot dead near Bleeker Street.
