In Letochatchie Alabama a pointer dog trade turned deadly when Lamar Sanderson, 19, and Robert Dickson, 21, quarreled after a previous deal. Dickson shot Sanderson’s father John, 60, who intervened, then both young men fired, leaving them both mortally wounded. The elder Sanderson, a merchant and postmaster, died. the young men are not expected to survive. Nearby reports note increased bear sightings near Duluth and scattered industry activity including a seed oil mill resuming operations in Maykaro.
At Chicago Union Stock Yards on August 18 the cattle market showed steady demand with natives and fancy steers in the 14 to 1050 range and veal calves at 9.25. Hogs sold higher with best grades firm and prices from 42 to 50.59 for prime sections, while sheep and lambs remained steady with lambs around 2.00 and common grades around 1.40. Continuous rail market notes listed grain and provisions futures with September and January dates.
