A five year old boy fell toward a wheel pit at a woolen factory morning fire near the city. Mr Foss rescued the child from the flames and the boy was resuscitated after being drawn out unconscious. Later a separate notice reports a family tragedy near Carentigh Feleoth where two youngest children were harmed in an accident.
Wacumatoox April 21 details amendments proposed by Representative Baker New York to name the northern half North Dakota and submit division to the people of the whole territory while the southern half would face a constitutional vote. Cooper Ohio supports adoption with objections addressed. committee adjourns awaiting action.
Reports describe widespread labor unrest with servant girls in Tarrytown walking out over wages. In Brooklyn, 8000 sugar refinery workers struck for higher pay. Strikes threaten transit services in Chicago and ongoing clashes erupt at Hayemeyer sugar works. Deputy sheriffs mobilize as rioting escalates, injuring police and workers.
A house fire traps D its track family members. Indy and her mother attempt to rescue stock from the barn. A root gives way and smoke suffocates Indy. Mrs Dolliger pulls her away but cannot save her. The son returns to find his mother dead and his sister fatally burned, amid charred ruins. The shock is expected to affect him mentally.
Washington April 21. The Labor Investigation Committee held a second session in a crowded room. William O. McDowell, a machinist and Knights of Labor member, testified on the organization’s aims to uplift workers, educate them, and foster employer collaboration for higher wages. He tied wage politics to watered railroad stock and dividend strategies, citing Gould and the New York horse car strike as catalysts for growth in K of L influence. Powderly recalled on origin and membership figures, noting women’s equal pay stance and debates on discipline.
